HORTICULTURE

On Wednesday' evening the Hutt Valiev Horticultural Society held the second of the series of lectures for the season. The subject of rose growing was ablv dealt with by Sir Alexander Roberts,’ who is one of the keenest amateur rose growers in the valley. The lecturer gave an interesting ac-j count of bis own observations and experiences in the cultivation of roses, describing his methods of planting and pruning. ' He explained that be did not specialise in growing roses purely for exhibition purposes but preferred, to grow for quantity of bloom and enjoyed the pleasure of cutting the flowers for those who were not so fortunate as to have gardens of their own. He hoped this year to be able to put up an exhibit at the society’s show. The large attendance was keenly interested and asked a number of questions. Sir Alexander Roberts was warmly thanked for his lecture by the president, Air. L. T. Watkins.
