KENT TERRACE
CIVIC LEAGUE’S ATTITUDE INVESTIGATION APPROVED The following letter has been . addressed to the acting-Prime Minister (the Hon. W. D. Stewart) by the secretary of the Civic League, in. respect of the Kent and Cambridge Terraces question;— “With reference to the representations being made to you in respect to the issuing of a proclamation to allow the proposed alterations in Kent and Cambridge Terraces to be carried out, I have, on behalf of my league, to express our appreciation of the action you are taking to institute a public inquiry. The league desires to see the business cleared up. “In raising objections at an early stage we did so on the grounds that the manner of proceeding with the work was improper (this is now generally recognised) ; that the citizens were not allowed due information as to what was intended to be done, and that encroachment on the reserve should not be made unless proved to be an absolute public necessity. “We desire in this connection to have it noted that those seeking the proclamation are dwelling on the traffic needs and safety in Kent Terrace, as if Kent Terrace was the only street being dealt with in the scheme. In our opinion a clear distinction must be drawn between Kent Terrace and Cambridge Terrace. “To allow of citizens interested making proper representations, if they so desire, we think that the plan adopted by the City Council and an official report of what is intended to be done should be published in the Press of the city before the inquiry is held. As this course has not been taken, we shall esteem it a favour if you will use your influence to have it given effect to.”
