PROGRESS GREATEST IN AUCKLAND:,;' .. During the - year ended March'3l, 1926, the total increase of population (exclusive 'of Maoris) was 29,255. The 'uei gain of population in the 'North Island was 18,830, or 2.31 per cent.; the increase, in the South' Island.'w l a's 10,425, or- ‘2.04 per cent, (remarks a report by the Census Office)’!’ ’.As the’ excess of births over deaths in the ; North Island 'for the year was 11,140, and in the South Island 6029, the gain in population over ' and above the natural increase' was 7690-for the' North Island, and 4396 for the South. For the South Island this'figure is higher than normal, and, no doubt, is-due, in part to the attraction of ’ the South Seas Exhibition at Dunedin.’' , In the in’tercensal period 1921-26 increases of population (excluding Maoris) in the various provincial districts have been as follow (percentage increase oil 1921 census given in'parentheses) :—
North Island.—Auckland, .55,307 (15.0) ; Hawke’s' Bav., 4644 (7.6) ; Taranaki, 5742 (9.3) ; Wellington, 24 A BOO (10.0)/ , Total, 90,493 (12.2)'. South Island.—Marlborough, 780 (1.4); Nelson, 2917 (6.1).; Westlapd, 844 (6.0) ; Canterbury, 14,712 (7,4) ; Otago 12,699 (9.3) ; Southland, 3026 (4.9)/ Total, 34,978 (7.3). /./,
