BIG TROTTING EVENTS AT CHRISTCHURCH COMMENT ON RICCARTON GALLOPS
NOTES AND COMMENTS FOOL’S PARADISE SOLD (By Telegraph from "The Watcher. ’) Christchurch, November 11. Amongst those present for the third day of the C.J.C. meeting was Mr. Otway R. Falkiner, the well-known Victorian pastoralist, and horse .owner, who purchased the New Zealand Cup winner of last year, The Banker. Mr. Falkiner, who is in Canterbury for show week with some stud sheep, is combining a business and.' pleasure trip. After seeing Fool’s Paradise win the Jockey Club Handicap for Mr. E. L. Riddiford, Mr. Falkiner was so taken with the performance that he offered a good four figure sum for the Absurd gelding, which was accepted. It is Mr. Falkiner’s intention to run his new purchase at Riccarton on Saturday.
Owing to no suitable rider being available for Commendation in the Stead Gold Cup at the weight, 7.12, Mr. Gaisford early in the week made arrangements fo' the services of R. Reed. The stjpii-. lation was made at the time that if it was decided to run Rapine, L. G. Morris would be available. Jcfferd has now decided to run both Star Stranger and Rapine and he has engaged F. E. Jones to ride. It is probable that Jones will be on Rapine and* Morris on Star Stranger. , . Several North Islanders' returned home without waiting for the conclusion of the C.J.C. meeting. Amongst them were H. Lorigan, J. Coyle, I*. Loomb, and A. Browne. <Euare was going particularly well in the Hurdle Race yesterday when he fell, and it looked as if he was certain to fill a place with a stand up. Carawock made a couple of blunders over the last two obstacles in the Hurdle Race yesterday, and these mistakes cost him his winning chance. Revel was never sighted in the Hurdle Race on Cup Day, so it was not surprising to find him paying the good price he did yesterday. He had a change of riders and the improvement effected was remarkable. It looks as if the original estimate of Agrion will have to be revised. It transpires that his poor showing in the Welcome Stakes was due to getting a bump early in the race. His subseouent form has been very marked. There was a good deal of ground for suspecting the form in the two-year-old race yesterday to prove unreliable in the future. Agrion would probablv have won in any case, but his task could have 'been made a good deal harder. Footfall accomplished a really smart performance in the Otaio Plate yesterday. He has done all his best racing . under welter weights, and this is probably due in large measure to efficient handling in contrast to the efforts of light boys under the lower scale of weights. Fresco is improving, and should not be long in running prominent!v again. Rapine has done exceedingly well since his races in the New Zealand and Canterbury Cups, and this has largely influenced the decision to take on the Stead Cup on Saturday. Rapine, in a true run race, should be 1 very hard to beat. Seatown has had a fairly strenuous time lately, but he continues to run consistently. He carried 61b. overweight in the Canterburj’ Cup, and it cost him third money. Comic Song was a bit sore when he went out for the Jockey Club Handicap, and took some time to get going in the race. When he did warm up he finished on. The time-for the Jockey Club Handicap, -Imin. 38sec., put up by Fool’s Paradise, is the fastest mile ever run at Riccarton. Precious was fried over p mile in the Jockey Club Handicap. There was a fair amount of support for her, no doubt attributable to the fact that she comes from Mason’s stable. Precious ran well for six furlongs and then went back. Of the candidates for the Oaks vesterdav, Phaola was the onlv one who looked up to the weight, and on their running she should have wbn. It is understood that in keepiim hor in the rear all the way, B. H. Morris rode to instructions. It is not alwavs wise to tie down a ennoble horseman so absolutely. Conditions may arise
in the running quite unexpected beforehand, and in endeavouring to follow instructions, and at the same time do the best they can under the circumstances, even the best of riders give poor exhibitions of horsemanship. Several All Red mares have left good stock, and All Pink, dam of Pink Terrace and Pink Note, has been responsible for a couple of useful pedformers. The Oaks winner is by Tractor. Bonliomme was favourite when R. Reed rode him on Cup Day. On that occasion he took no pqrt in the race. Reed rode him again on Monday, and he was one of the well-backed 'ones once more. The public then dropped him, and at his third start, under an apprentice, he was always a winner. Whatever chance Killocra and Buoyant had in their race yesterday was spoiled through their colliding at the rise of the barrier. Both ran very fair races afterwards. Nadarino ran out the seven furlongs of his race yesterday in good style. It was his first trial beyond six furlongs, and is encouraging to future efforts be-
yond a sprint distance. Rapier had his first race yesterday since lie won at Trentham last July. He has been in trouble in the interval, therefore it was of interest to see him running a very creditable fourth against more seasoned horses It looks as if Rapier has only got to go on the right wav to win good stakes. T. Green, who has been in Sydney, and Melbourne doing the light-weight riding for F. I). Jones, returned this week. He was at Riecarton yesterday, and rode Piuthair- and Sovena. Finora has been a source of trouble lately getting rid of her rider before the start. She did this at Rangiora and Motukarara, being responsible nt the latter meeting for puting J. Beale out of action .for the Cup meeting. Yesterdav she threw her rider and bolted for the scraping shed. Yet in the race she was always prominent and finished a fair third. Gold Brick, a five-vear-old brother to Nadarino, showed good speed in the early stages of the Avon Handicap yesterday, and may do better against weaker opposition. .Moorland did good track work prior to the opening of the meeting, but in his only two starts so far he has failed to run'un to it. He showed speed for half a mile yesterdav, but then retired. At the back of the steward’s stand at Riecarton there is a fire plug marked “FPS.” Yesterday Mr. E L. Riddiford, owner of Fool’s Paradise, took great delight in pointing out to his friends that while he was .previouslv convinced that Fool’s Paradise would win the Tockev Chib Handicap he was, since seeing the plug mark, absolutely certain about victorv. “What more do you want?” he said. “FPS. It’s the fifth race and FP stands for Fool’s Paradise. Further, he is by Absurd from Mascot, and the mark is painted in my colours.” Fool’s Paradise duly won. The five-year-old English mare Prophet’s Mark, who runs in the same colours as Count Cavour, was a quiet tip for the Apprentices’ Race at Riecarton yesterday. She did not get a good passage at the start, and she was so far back that with the race half over her chance was hopeless. She ran a fair race and may soon show to better advantage. Pangolin’s first dav form at Riccarton was due to the bursting'of an artery near the eye. Yesterday he was alwavs handy and ran a creditable fourth. Peho mav soon run a better race than she did yesterday. She did not get the good passage that her stablemate Goldtown did. A Press Association ,message from Melbourne states that Star d’Or’s new owner is Mr. Mackinnon, chairman of the Victoria Racing Club Committee.
