The Hon. J. B. Gow, M.L.C., was a passenger to Wellington fiom the north yesterday. The members of the Arbitration Court (Mr. Justice l-’razer, Alessrs. W. Scott, and H. Hunter), who reached Wellington from Auckland on Saturday, left last night for Dunedin. Air. A. G. Barnett, secretary of the Harbour Board, resumed duty yesterday' after his annual holiday. Sir Herbert Nicholls (Chief Justice of Tasmania) and Airs. Nicholls will arrive on the Moeraki at Auckland to-day, on a holiday tour of the Dominion. Mr. John Fuller, of Sydney, an exmember of the Wellington City Council, will arrive here from Auckland to-day. Afr. Hugo Anson, Mus.Bac., of Cambridge University, an old Wellingtonian, has been appointed as a lecturer and teacher at the Roy’al Cpllegc of Afusic, London. The appointment is for six months, with the possibility’ of extension. Air. William Brophy, of the firm of Alessrs. Brophy end Alowlem, Palmerston North, died yesterday morning at the age of 56, alter about a month’s illness of heart trouble. Air. Brophy’ leaves a family’ of three sons and three daughters. After a brief illness the. death took place at Island Bay on Saturday of Air.Thomas Bland, J.P., who, in 1920, retired on superannuation from the New Zealand Defence Department. Air. Bland was a native of Enniskillen, Ireland, and was born in 1850. He came out to New Zealand in 1860 with his father and family. After leaving school he joined the Armed Constabulary in Taranaki as a trooper, and for some years was a non-commissioned officer. He was awarded the New Zealand War Medal, the Long Service and Good Conduct Aledal, and the New Zealand Royal Veterans’ Aledal. On retiring from the Government service in 1888 he went to the West Coast, where he engaged in several commercial enterprises on his own account, and during which time he held various public positions. About 24 years ago he re-entered the Government service. Mr. Bland had been a prominent member of the Alasonic Order for about 50 years, and a member of the Oddfellows’ Lodge for 17 vears. lie was also an active member of the Newtown and Island Bay Bowling Clubs up to the time of his death. Air. Bland was the father of a family of Ifi children. Four of his sons served with the New /.calami Forces in the late war, one 'being killed in action at I’lers. Mr. Bert Royle, representative for J. C. Williamson, Ltd., returned from a business trip to Auckland yesterday.
