THE RACING WORLD
NOTES AND COMMENTS
NOTES AND COMMENTS The flat racing season is fast drawing to a close, and this month the events of the racing clubs in the Dominion will see the jumping brigade catered for, ( The Night Patrol’s three-vcar-old brother is racing iu America tinder the name of Night March. Last season he won one race at Jamaica (New York). With the conclusion of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's autumn meeting tire two-vear-old racing season will oractically be at an end. though one or two of that age may be seen out at Wellington in July.' Lady Cavendish is the biggest stake'winner amongst the two-year-olds this season. Charlatan was made a hot favourite for the Otipua Steeplechase at Timaru (savs a southern writer). He was well placed throughout the first round, and made a forward move going out of the straight, but on reaching the next fence he made a faulty jump and lost several lengths. He again made another bad jump at the board fence and fell. This was- six furlongs from home. J. R. Kaan. his rider, received a severe shaking C. Emerson continues to ride winners at the southern fixtures. On the concluding dav at the South Canterburv meeting lie’rode three firsts out of the seven flat races. Misgovern, after running second to Ben mure in a fast-run race at Blenheim, and starting a hot favourite, was neglected on the totalisator later in the dav, finishing up fourth favourite. She could do no better, however, than again fill second position. Aurore, who won the Wai-iti Steeplechase nt South Canterbury meeting on Saturdav, is one of the few Birkenhead horses at inesent racing in the Dominion. After a long series of outs, Voute managed to win a maiden race at the South Canterbury meeting on Saturdav. This gelding was under R. J. Mason’s care for some time, but not making the necessarv improvement was eventually sold, anil Saturdav last marked his first success. Gloaming has been ridden by four jcckevs during his wonderful career. B. Deelcv rode him in nearly all his earlier victories, and G. Young in the later wins. IL Gray has ridden him once to victory, and R. Hatch has had two winning mounts on him. Royal Star was made a good second favourite in the Tekapo Hurdles at the South Canterbury meeting, but at no stage of the race did he flatter his supporters. After making a faulty jump at the first hurdle, he tailed off. and finished nearly a furlong behind the placed horses. Air. W. H. Gaisford has given _ the name of Commendation to the rising two-vear-old son of Limond and Eulogv. which he purchased in February from his breeder, Air. G. M. Currie, of the Koatanui Hud, Wanganui. Commendation is well connected, for he is a halfbrother to Humbug. Epitaph, and Homage, all of whom were bv Absurd. Rich Prize is reported to be slight!? ■ amiss at present, and he was unable to fulfil his South Canterbury engagements. An interesting fact in connection with the horses placed in the Two Thousand Guineas, decided at Newmarket on Wednesday last, is that thev were all sold bv auction at Doncaster in the autumn of 1023. Manna realised G3OO guineas. St. Becan 2800 guineas, and Oojah 1350 guineas. Kilfane burst a btood-vesel after going a counle of furlongs in the Timaru Cup. He is reported to have been much distressed when brought back to the bird-cage The Ellerslie trainer J. Williamson has a good-looking sort named Daye, bv Lucuilus —Congress in work. He is well spoken of. Town Bank, who has been more _or less sore for some time, is still being kept in work, possibly with the idea that he may prove a winter proposition. t
When carrying Mr. A. R. Williams’s colours Humbug acquitted himself well, and at two years old he captured stakes to the value of £3120 for the Gisborne sportsman. It was therefore not surprising to find Mr. Williams among the buvers of the first batch of Humbug’s youngsters when they went up for sale nt Randwick recently. The youngster selected by Air. Williams was the colt from Lone' Gull, who was secured for 400 guineas. According to the Sydney “Referee,” the commissioner acting for Air. Williams was instructed to bid up to 1000 guineas for the colt in question, so that he would be regarded as a bargain. Lone Gull is an' English-bred mare bv The Gull (son of Gallinule) from Far Awav, a daughter of Eager and the St. Simon mare Mousme. The first of Lovematch’s progeny is now being broken in by V. Colello, the youngster being bv King Alark. 'I he mare has a filly foal at foot bv Lord Quex, and is in foal to Leighton. Loval Irish seems to have lost all his former dash, and is now down among the bottom weights. At the top of his form the Absurd horse was a very useful- performer, but since his return from his last Australian trip lie has failed to show up in his races. No doubt his poor showings are the outcome of a severe attack of influenza while in Australia. He lias apparently failed to properly recover. Reports from Riccarlon state that Haze is an improved horse since the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, and if that is so lie should make a bold bid at the coming Hawke’s Bay Cup meeting. He was very badly ridden in the Sockburn Handicap, one mile and a quarter, when be finished second to Fool’s Paradise. He has only to improve a little on that performance to be a verv dangerous opponent in the Hawke’s Ba>- Cup. At the Auckland trotting meeting held on Saturday last Rouble Event, who ran third in the Cornwall Handicap, is reported to have covered much more ground than svas necessary, and was decidedlv unlucky not to have won. " He is engaged on the second dav in the Liverpool Handicap, and may show to better advantage. .Snake ran well over a mile and a half in the hurdles at the Hamilton meeting on the second day. He led for most of the distance, but, owing to his rider losing an iron, faded away in the final stage, getting third about four lengths behind the other placed horses. Snake should be kept in mind for winter racing, for he jumps well, and with a little more racing mav cause his presence to be felt if he is brought to the Ellerslie meeting. Drawbridge, the English-bred colt, by Bridge of Earn, has been rather a disappointment since he raced in Auckland. He appears to lie coming into form, judging by the manner in which he finished in his engagements at Hamilton. Archeen has been a profitable proposition this season, and in winning the Te Rapa Handicap, six furlongs, at Hamilton, he showed that he is a good one, and will be difficult to beat in much more important engagements. Archeen has been running well over distances up to a mile, and the Te Rapa course absolutely favours a horse
’ engaged in a sprint event with any pretensions to stay over a middle distance. The long straight is too much for brilliant sprinters, but the stayers gather them. j If the cable is correct in stating that Air. 11. Ilassal received 700 guineas for the brood mare Conceit, at the ovdney thoroughbred sales, then it must be admitted that he got a good price for her (says “The Squire”). She was foaled in 1910, being bred in that year by Mr. G. D. Greenwood, and is by Boniform (half-brother to Martian) —Lady' Wayward 11, an Englishbred mare by Ladas. Conceit went to the stud in 1913, and her productions so far known to race frequenters are St. Anne’s, by St. Savin ; Egotism, bv Demosthenes; Oddity, by All Black; Bumptious, Kilceit and De Luxe, all by Kilboy. Through an error yesterday' Coch-y-Bondhu was stated to have let her admirers down badly’ at the South Canterbury meeting. The paragraph should have read: “Coch-y-Bondhu let her admirers down badly on the first day of the South Canterbury meeting.” WHANGAREI ACCEPTANCES ißy telegraph.—pkf.ss association.) A sensation occurred at the 'lhursk (Northumberland) races when it was announced that the Jockey Club stewards had commissioned a veterinary surgeon to take a sample of the saliva of Azimuth, who finished second in the Thirsk Handicap on Friday, The sample was sent to an expert for analysis. E. T. O’Sullivan, the owner and trainer of Azimuth, declares that there was no sign of anything irregular in the horse’s condition. The horse bad never been tampered with. The Jockey Club will have to defend its ac-tion.-—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn THE PURSER CASE PLAINTIFFS ORDERED TO PAY COSTS Sydney, May 4. In connection with the Purser case, the Court has issued an order directing plaintiffs to pay the costs of the previous action as wen as the costs of the action then before the Court. This finally disposes of the case.— Press Assn. [Messrs. Corteen, Tye, Godby, and Cairns' issued a Supreme Court writ against the Victoria Racing Club and its members in their personal character, and against the stipendiary stewards at the Caulfield meeting on October 15 last, and against the Victoria Amateur Turf Club, its committee and members, seeking damages for the disqualification of themselves and the horse Purser, also for the rejection of the entries of the horses Heroic and Irish Rhvthm. The writ set out that such disqualifications and rejection of entries were illegal, invalid, improper, ultra vires, contrary to the principles of natural justice, not bona fide, and of no effect. An injunction was’ sought restraining the defendants from enforcing the disqualification, but was refused by the Court.] FIXTURES Mnv 8 anil 9—Hawke's Bay .T.C. Autumn. Slav 9—A in berk'J RC. Annual.
