NEW ZEALAND BISLEY

SHOOTING IN THE RAIN SOME GOOD SCORES DESPITE BAD CONDITIONS POSITIONS CHANGE RAPIDLY (From Our Special Reporter. ) Trentham, Alay 4. The long spell of fine weather broke definitely on Saturday’ night, and after 24 hours’ rain riflemen contending for the New Zealand Championship at Trentham were to-day faced with conditions which detracted from pleasant shooting. A threatening sky .in the early’ morning caused a dull light and elevation troubles* and the first files also had to shoot in rain showers. The rain hold off for tho remainder of tho morning, but at lunch time the wind from the south-east brought a steady downpour. Under these conditions tho positions of tho leaders for the Belt underwent some rapid changes. Rain caus cd shots to fly high and wide, and in addition the wind was inclined to shiftiness. On the whole, however, the wind, which was mostly from the right front but occasionally changed to tbe lett, was easily readable, and the least of the competitors' worries. Two Ballinger Belt, matches were completed, tho Auckland Alatch (300 and 600 yards 10 shots), and the AAellington Match (300 and 600 yards, 10 shots). All but the concluding distance of the AA'ellington Match were .•ompleted before lunch. Owing to tlie rain only the 600 yards was taken in the afternoon. It was intended to fire the first range (800 yards) of the Taranaki Match, and as this was postponed it looks as if the meeting will extend to I hiirsday unless tho programme is curtailed. At 300 yards in the Auckland Alatch, tlie conditions, apart from the light rain Carly, were ideal for shooting, ;ind although’ no possibles were made the scoring was high generally. F. Soler (Wanganui) secured 49, getting off the bull with his ’ast shot .1. Harris (Linkwater) and A. J. Green (Westport) also got 19, and R. E. Harrison (Hawera) 48. At (ICO vards the rain had cleared, but the wind drew down from the gul-li.-s and required careful watching. E'ecation troubles were also common, and semes gcncral'y were on a lower scale. Harrison added another 48 and took tho match with 96, while* Harris got (he same total with 47. \\ . H. West, who has be.-n below form, showed a return to his best with 95 (48 at GOO yards), and H. I. Flank (N.Z.I’.S.) and A. J. Green shot steadi'y for the same total Soler, who had got 49 at 300 yards, secured 44. The 500 yards distance of Urn AVeL lington .Alafeh wasjhon fired, and shooting was good, though the scoring was not-particularly high. G. Crcmie (Ashburton). ,1. Brvd.-n (Kaiaixii). AV. J. Johnston (Christehiirch). and D. J. Anderson (Kaituna) each secured 49. Rain was falling stcadilv as the firers went down for tho conclus'on of the match. The shooting, nevertheless, wits better (han usua’ under such conditions, although lli-ro were many poor scores. Hr.yden shot solidly for 48 and he took the match with u total of 97 —excellent shouting under the conditions, and his total was out bv itself. Cadet l„ Hare, a youthfu 1 shot, who practises with the Old Navals Club, also shot brilliant l.v at GOO yards, registering 48 in quirk time, and taking second place with 91. That the shooting was affected by Ihe conditions is shown by the fact that only nine got over 91. To-day's shooting concluded tho short ranges, with the exception o’ the 600 yards range of the Dominion match, which is nut a Belt competition. It concluded the Trentham aggregate, which resulted in a tie between D. J. Anderson (Kaituna) an d H. Donald (Opaki), the former winning on the best aggregate at 6(10 yards. Anderson also is now tlie Belt leader with three long-range matches to l>e lie d. He is a young shot, in the early twenties, and inis been shooting very consistently. The leader on Saturday, AJills, dropped down to 32nd place. At the annual meeting of the association to-uight feeling relbience was made to the death of tlie late president, Colonel Collins. Colonel Hughes was elected president in his place.
