HUTT RIVER BOARD
The Hutt River Board met last week, there being present Messrs. W. T. Strand (chairman), J. Mabev, W. 11. Smith. S. Clendon, and J. Mitchell. The chairman stated that the river was now in a very good condition, and the work carried out was doing all that was required. The board's policy of keeping a man employed constantly to watch the river’s action was a good one. Mr. Buckingham wrote asking the board to insist on tho Pipe Company compensating him to flic extent) of £5O for damage done to his property. It was decid'd to forward a copy of the letter to the company with a request for a reply. It was stated’ in reply to a protest from the Western Hutt Association that the board had no intention of selling Gear Island to sports bodies. A report was received from tho engineer (Mr. Sladden) wherein he stated ho had made an inspection of tho river in conjunction with Mr. Searle. The big weir at Huse’s was causing develop*, nients m the river channel which bad improved in width opposite the recent washout to the roads. Below this it was cutting in at Page’s and Mifc.hell’s, the. stream being now wholly against the cast bank. Mr. Searle was going to put in some cable and willow work, which was all that was advisable pending tho channel developing further down. At Mitchell’s the- board had, for several seasons. planted willows and elected a fence. At Dickie’s some small stone groins, recently constructed, w;re, in conjunction with the bo v n groynes, working well, and tho late Mr. Lang Meason’s scheme was now developing well. Tho conditions about there had never before been so favourable. The report was adopted. Mr. J. Mitchell was annotated denntychairman during Air. Strand’s absence in Sydney in connection with the severe illness of his son.
