THE RACING WORLD

MARLBOROUGH AND SOUTH CAMEIBI’RY MEETINGS

NOTES AND COMMENTS

NOTES AND COMMENTS Crown Star, who won the Waterlea Cup at Blenheim, was bred by Sir George Hunter, being by Crown Imperial ll—Tattle. Although the field lie beat was not a strong one, the way he won suggests that he is an improving sort. When contesting the Novice Stakes, of live furlongs, cn the first day _ at the recent Blenheim meeting, Morning Gift faded cut of the picture as soon as the straight was reached, but on the concluding day, oyer a furlong further, won nicely. There was a vast improvement between the first and second day’s racing, but it was probably due to Morning Gift being in want of ai race. The English-bred horse Musketoon continues to do steady work at Ellerslie, and is looking a picture of health. Nothing strenuous has been asked of him for some time. His stablemate, Lady Ridicule, is also a regular worker, but since the autumn meeting her tasks have been of a very light order. It was reported that J. McCombe contemplated leaving for Sydney with bis team about the middle of this month, but it seems probable that the trip has been abandoned for the present. Sunny Loch has failed to strike form, which chiefly accounts for the change of plans, but most likely, if his horses show improvement in the meantime, McComb may go to Australia in the spiiug. If track work can be taken as a guide, Gloaming has been keyed up lor the Hawke’s Bay J.C. meeting. His gallop at Ricearton over six furlongs last Wednesday morning in lmin. 14 4-sscc. was a brilliant effort, as he was not bustled over the last furlong. Morses from the stable of the Melbourne trainer J. Holt, won £9300 at the Australian Jockey Club's autumn meeting, while G. Price was a good second with £7730. Price is now an easy first in this season’s list of Sydney’s winning trainers. Tarleton’s winning effort in the Timaru Cup makes up for the rather bad luck he had at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting, where he was decidedly unlucky not to win one race. Being a difficult horse to rifle is probably the cause of his in-and-out running at different times. He is now going more kindly’ than of lai;, and perhaps will turn out what was expected of him as a three-year-old. The useful hurdler, ’Brisco Mail, has been engaged .in the Great Northern Steeplechase, and it will be interesting to see how he shapes as a cross-country performer during the winter season. He looks the part of a successful contestant between the flags, while there is reason to believe that he will be able to see out lengthy steeplechase journeys. Reports credit Clarinda with not having done well on her northern trip. She looked rather weary at Hamilton on the second day, and although she ran a good race,' it was obvious she was fiot herself. According to a northern writer, a lady supporter of Archibald grew very excited at the finish of the Welter Handicap at Avondale. “Archibald! Archibald!” she screamed. “What’s the matter, dear?” responded a wit in a higher seat. Then all was silence—except for the laughter. A. southern buyer h»s been inquiring the price of Sir George Clifford’s four-year-old mare, Top Score, who is reported to be on the sale list. The daughter of Autumnus—-Winning Way has started in twelve races tin's season for two wins, a second and two thirds. Her winning essays Were in the Otokia Welter Handicap tone mile), under 9st. 31b., at the Dunedin J.C. summer meeting, and the Telegraph Weller Handicap (one mile), with Bst. 31b. in the saddle, at the D.J.C. spring fixture. She is bred in the purple as a brood mare and ranks as a full sister to the brilliant gelding Winning Hit. Coch-y-Bondhu let her admirers down badlv at the South Canterbury’ meeting. She showed a lot of speed, but she was beaten after going six furlongs. It was a disappointing effort after her form at Ricearton, where she ran out a mile pretty well. The Magpie colt which J. M. Cameron brought over with him from Sydney’ is a gift horse presented to the Hawke’s Bay owner by the Weft Australian sportsman Mr. W. J. Connolly, on the eve of the latter’s departure on a trip to the Old Country. The form shown at the Australian Jockey Club’s autumn meeting makes next 'season’s weight-for-age prospects look very interesting. Heroic, Spearfelt, and Windbag are sufficient to furnish a problem. At a mile or a mile and a quarter it is predicted that Heroic will beat the other pair if he jumps away from the barrier. There mav not be a great deal between them at a mile and a half, but beyond that distance Heroic may’ lie beaten by’ both tlie other colts. In long races Windbag and Spearfelt are expected to p.rove superior to the older horses next season. Palencia won the steeplechase at South Canterbury very easily at the finish, but he chanced one or two fences, and he had a narrow escape from falling at the second last obstacle. If the report that Pamplona has failed to stand a preparation is correct, Mr. L. C. Hazlett has a good second string in Palencia to carry his colours during the coming jumping season. The two-year-old filly Windshield, by Tractor—Ki'lbreeze, has been taken in hand bv G. J. Pine, and will be worked cilong slowly in preparation for next season’s racing. She shows a good deal of speed, ami may turn out quite a useful three-year-old. It is stated that Mr. Wenzl Scholium’s Royal Blood, Ruapapa, and Sandstar wifi be taken over to Australia to i.’ac.e. If turned out at their best bytrainer W. Kirk, the trio should at least pay expenses, as they are much better than average performers. Cupidon was recently discovered in -his box suffering from severe lameness, and for some time the trouble could not be ■ located. Patient investigation resulted in the surmise that the root of the injury was in cue of his feet, and on a shoe being removed and other steps taken, a long-standing gathering was opened out. Tame Box, who is in the care of H. Dovle, of Palmerston North, is being got ready for winter racing. Tame box is nine years old. He. started three times last winter, following on nearly a year’s rest, and he lias done no racing since. As the son of Volpone shows, to advantage in heavy going, the next few months’ racing should suit him.

The Nassau—Garston mare which raced in New Zealan 1 under the title of Eigliteenpence, ami who was subscquentlv transported to New South Wales, where she won a scries of races at country meetings, was recently awarded first prize :n the brood mare class at a country show.

The well-known joekcv G. Young was not nl the South Canterbury meeting. He met with an accident a few days ago, and lie is temporarily unable to do auv riding.

Gold Brick, who won a double at the South Canterbury Jockey’ Club’s meeting, is a three-year-old brother to Nadarino, being by Solfcrino—Nada. The Comedy King horse Biplane, a good performer in Air. G. D. Greenwood’s colours, is now at the stud in New South Wales. His first yearlings were sold in Sydney at the Raster sales, and they Created a. favourable impression, one of them realising 525 guineas. After Te Kara’s forward running recently in Australia, he was looked to for further improvement, and he was rewarded on Saturday, by’ winning the cup at the City Tattersail’s meeting.
