SEAMEN’S AWARD
UNION’S CLAIM FAILS. Mr. T. I{. Maunsell, S.M., delivered bis reserved judgment in 'the Magistrate's Court yesterday in the case ' in which the Wellington Seamen’s Union proceeded against the South Taranaki Shipping Company for a penalty of £lO for an alleged breach of the seamen’s award. ■ The union alleged that the qompany continuously employed a, seaman for over twelve months,, and contrary to the award, did not allow him the usual holiday of fourteen days. The Magistrate said the evidence disclosed that the seaman had received wages for fourteen days in lieu of holiday. The fact that only one day intervened between the signing off from one ship and lhe signing on to another did not constitute unbroken engagement. He was satisfied that this brief interval between the two transactions was merely an unforeseen accident. The case was dismissed, security of appeal being fixed at £lO. At the hearing Dlr. W. T. Young appeared for the union, and defendant comnanv was represented by Mr. J. F. B. Stevenson.
