NEW ZEALAND BISLEY
OPENING DAY’S SHOOTING SERVICE CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDED WON BY H SIMMONDS, WANGANUI I (From Our Special Reporter.) Trentham, May 1. For the second year in succession, IT. Simmonds, of the Wanganui Rifle Chib, has won the service championship at the N.R.A. meeting at Trentham. Simmonds, who is also the present holder of the Ballinger Bolt, this year scored 109 points in the Service Aggregate, and won it V.va margin of 6 points from ,R. 11. Niclioll, of the Petone Club, McNabb, Dannevirko (101 points), being the only ether conipetitor to reach three figures. Nichol!, the runner-up, r occupied third position last year. The whole of the service shooting was completed this morning. The first match was the rapid shooting at 300 yards. Competitors had to fire 10 round in 35 seconds, and there was some good shooting. Rifleman T. L. Christinsen’s -score of 46 out of a possible 50 was excellent, and there were six others with 40 or over. The second match was 10 shots at a disc target exposed for three seconds each shot. It required considerable ability’ to snapshoot. this disc, but J. Scott, of the Petone Club, put up the remarkably good score of 44 out of_ a possible 50, including seven shots dead central. The falling tile competition was an interesting match. Five iron plates are exposed at yard intervals for each ■competitor, who loads five rounds standing, and on the signal, falls prone and commences shooting. To secure the possible score a hit has to be scored every shot. This was successfully accomplished by two competitors, O. M. Ching, of th« Karori Club, son of the old New Zealand representative, F. W. Ching, and J. S Feast (Greytown). Seventeen others knocked over four plates. The concluding Match of the scries was at a fi»uri- target representing an infantryman earryinoi his rifle at the ready and adopting a crouching attitude. The target, was exposed three times, and at; each exposure moved across the firer’s front, during which period he fired two shots. It was left to one of the youngest shots on the range to show the way here. Cadet J. McKelvie, of Scots College, with four hits dead central and two others close in. won the 1 match by a point from Riflemen Hitchcock (Tabaka) and Mclver (Petone). It was a first-class performance for the youthful winner.
The weather conditions generally were .good, but (he wind showed an inclinat:. : '’ii to chop and change. The entry has reached the satisfactory’ total of 325, an increase of 75 on the number upon which the programme was based. There arc a large number of tyros present, indicating a quickening interest, in the sport by’ the younger generation. \ Prior to commencing business the men were briefly addressed by’ the Chief Executive Otljcer (Colonel Hughes). and competitors' bared their heads and stood in silence for a few seconds as a mark, of respect to the late Colonel R. J. ('» I-’ lins, who for many years filled.the office of president of the association. Riflemen also carried a.motion ,of sympathy’ with the relatives of the Prime Minister m his illness. ; On behalf of the association," Colonel Hughes extended a welcome to tho competitor's. ■ • After lun/heor? a start was made with the target shooting proper, Hie first two ranges (300 and 500 .turds) of the opening match being fired. Owing to early darkness the concluding range (600 yards) was not fired. ’This match does not count fort the Ballinger Bolt, it being in the nature, of a preliminary to the Belt matches, but it counts for tho Trantham aggregate, which includes all shooting up to and inclusive of 600 yards. Conditions .were a good light and rear wind inclined to vary and change direction. Generally it was from tho left rear, but occasionally it veered to (leadin and 'even came from the right.' It caused some trouble, but conditions on the whole were favourable to good shooting, and there were some high scores. Pos-sibles were scored at 300 yards by Simmonds (Wanganui) find Turnbull (New Plymouth), and at 500 yards !>• Boon (Karori), Munro (Wyndham), and Mansson (Nelson). All ths cards have not been handed in, but it is reported that a tyro has 69 on; Boon (Karori) has 68. Swanson 67, Scrrgt.-Major Frank 67. and J. C. Feast 67. •To-morrow the opening match will be completed, and the Canterbury Match (300 yards and 500 yards) will bo fired, as well ns the.first stage (300 yards) of the Auckland Match. The annual meeting of the association will be held on Monday night.
