Time, lmin. 30sec7 NOTES ON THE RACING (By Tel.—Special Correspondent.) In the Novice Stakes well over a third of the. money on the machine was on Morning Gift who was regarded as being unbeatable, but she faded out badlv after having every chance. Turning 'for home the favourite closed up] like a book, allowing Tempean and Astonform to beat her home fairly easilv. Tempean won by half a length from Astonform, with Morning Gift a' tiring third. , Waterlea was fourth, and ■ Geordie Hill fifth. In the Hillersden Trot Mav Reta was favoiirite. She got away smartly, and the race was all over practically before it started. The favourite led past the stand eight or ten lengths
in front half a mile from home. She was eased up over the final stages, but still was four lengths to the good of Ashley Belle when the post was reached. Welcome Boy was live lengths further back third. . An -inquiry was held into the running of Countess Eve, but the stewards accepted J. Pugh’s explanation that he was suffering f-om an injury which affected him du.’ing the race. They added that, they would view with disfavour any further attempt on his part to ride. The Waterlea Cup provided a remarkably fine finish. Pronto was the first to show out, with Sanctuarv and Kalakaua in close attendance, and Lady Gay at the head of the others. When the field straightened out for home, Sanctuary, Pronto, and Kalakaua were together, with Crown Star on their heels. At the stewards’ stand Crown Star shot to the front, and stayed long enough jo win in a stirring finish by a long neck from I’ronto, who was half a length to the good of Kalakaua. Sanctuary was fourth and Lady Gay fifth. Bonatic won the Opawa Welter Handicap very easily by a couple of lengths from Ardfinnan. Bezau was third, a similar distance further back, and Manchester was fourth. Misgovern came with a rattle at the end of the Autumn Handicap, and just failed to wear down the favourite, Benmure, who won Jsy a head Island was a length and a half further back. Pink Rose, who had a bad run, waf, fourth. Subsequently the stewards admonished and imposed a fine of £2 on 11. H. Hobson, the rider of Misgovern, for careless riding. His mount jammed I‘ink Rose on the rails in the back ctretch. In an exciting finish Tempean .won the Beaver Handicap by one and a quarter lengths from Snnbath, with Solrino two lengths further back. The Bolter ran fourth, Bonatic fifth, and Esquimaux sixth. Kilmar, who had a bad run at the start, was last. Lizzie r’nnz .trotted home a nice winner in the Second Trot, having four lengths to spare from Jim Beldon, who was three lengths clear of Btandon. The others were bunched close up; The, concluding event was won by Debate, who came up on the outside In the straight, and stalling off a challenge by Pink Rose, scored nicely by two lengths. Sir Pam was a similar distance further back, and Gamecock, who faded badly ovet Ute last stages, was fourth.
TO-DAY’S ACCEPTANCES
NOTES AND COMMENTS When R. J. Mason decided against the trip to Sydney, rumours were current that he was 'afraid that Gloaming might be beaten by The Hawk if t.hev met in Australia. Stories of this nature will be effectively silenced now that Mason ■ has brought Gloaming north to compete at the Hawke’s Bay autumn meeting against all comers. It is to be hoped that these two good horses will get a fair run through the race with no interference, and unless the writer is very much mistaken The Hawk will have a fairly good view of Gloaming ’at the finish. At Riccarton <ki Wednesday morning, Gloaming and Haze jumped off together at the six-furlong post on the grass and kept together for three furlongs, which they left behind in 37sec. Then Gloaming drew away, finishing up bis task in lipin. 14 4-ssec., a fine effort. When the w inning post was reached lie was three seconds in front of Haze, who carried G. Young, and was not ridden out Gloaming, who carried a light weight, was going on well at the end of a fine gallop. Haze is likely to carry a good deal of support in the Hawke’s Bay Cup. Though still a maiden, he is a good galloper and a proved stayer. Luxurious!, who dead-heated , with Abcrfeldy in the two-year-old 'race at Ht mil ton. had been unplaced in his seven previous starts.. He is a colt by I.ucullus—Lassie Doon, and consequently a full-brother to Master Doon, a very useful tliree-vear-old. , At a sale of thoroughbreds from Mr. John Grigg s Lotigbeach Stud, held recently at Invercargill, 20 lots were sub-' milted, and, when it "is stated that in no case did the bidding reach the threefigure shape, it may be guessed that the proceedings were not marked with spirit. One of the lots T-a four-year-old bv Captain from Foapt Flake—-was knocked down for 5 guineas.' ' It is reported that Mr. I. Paterson has decided to retire Surveyor definitely from the turf. The game old Nassau horse has been at it since he topped the money list as a two-vear-old, winning over £3ooo|for his breeder, Sir. G. L. Stead, and creating an. Australasian record (since broken bv Glohming) for four furlongs. Sold to Mr. W. G. Stead, Surveyor was unlucky as a tliree-year-old, n'arotyly missing wins in very fast times to good horses in Australia and the Dominion. The Hawke’s Bay Owner, however, 1 got a good return for the | big price he gave for Surveyor, but was very unfortunate in disposing of him, apparently when done as a racehorse, to Mr. Paterson for 110 guineas. After service at the stud, the horaa was put into work again, slid, although always
more or less lame’, lie has been responsible for some sterling efforts. Alto- S gether Surveyor has contested about ninety races, for twenty-one wins, sixteen seconds, and ten thirds. His total earnings amounted to £13,700, of which his present owner has b-en credited with £7SOU. • The connections of Le Clioucas apparently thought he was unbeatable on the. second day of the Hamilton meeting. Reports from Hamilton state that he was very unlucky to be beaten bad luck at the start being the cause. Hipo ran fairly prominentry in the Storey Memorial Handicap at the -Hamilton meeting on Tuesday, says an Auckland writer, being well up at the entrance to the straight, and eventually filling fourth position. .< The distance, one milq and a-quarfer, : s apparently a bit too far for him, but in his present form he should be more prominenti at the mile. Those who noticed the great'speed shown by Double Event at the recent Wellington trotting meeting will be interested to see that he is engaged in the Cornwall Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting to-day. Some time back had the bail luck to lose the services of Copper Nob, who was then giving every indication of turning out useful. However, a bit of good fortune came bis way the other day, for Mr. T. H. Lownhanded him over a coming two-year-old bv King John—War Talk to mould into shape "for racing. The youngster is. therefore, a half-brother to Suomi, wiio has been racing with success in Australia. The owner of the Auckland 'bred gelding, Te Kara, who is now racing in Sydney, was asked the other week to piit a'.price upon him, which he did, Tuit no business was the outcome, the prospective btrner beinj* of the opinion that the figure was too tall lot him. According to a Christchurch exchange Nincompoop’s knees are giving R. J. Mason trouble again. When the Absurd colt returned from Sydney last spring, his knees were blistered, and they stood the strain until just on the eve of the C.J.C. Easter meeting, when it became apparent tb->t they were again paining him. The writer quoted says: “Had Nincompoop kept sound he would have beaten Black Cat in the Champagne, for Black Cat only justbeat Chignon, and if sound Nincompoop would have beaten his stablematf by lengths!” Mr. J. O’Neill has unfortunately lost tile rising two-yerr-okl colt by Arrowsmith from the brilliant mare Gladiole, dam of the speedy Orchid.
