MATCH FOR PLONKET SHIELD CANTERBURY BEAT OTAGO BY FOUR WICKETS By Tsleeraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, December 2f. The Otago-Canterbury match for the Plunket fiaield was resumed to-day in fine weather. An even and thoroughly interesting game was brought to a conclusion shortly before 6 p.m., when Canterbury emerged victorious by four wickets. It would be invidious to say that the better side won, and tho opinion may be expressed that the teams are fairly evenly matched. The wicket wore exceedingly well, and the southerners enhanced their reputation as a batting' side by totalling 283 in their second innings. Shepherd added 33 to his previous day’s total, and again batted, in a masterly style. Galland’s 64 was a fine exhibition of aggressive batting. His defence was sound all through, and his scoring shots were all finely and powerfully executed. Snideberg batted soundly for his 28. The Canterbury attack was well tried out, and at times the bowling appeared to be almost in a knot. Neither Read nor Hayes appeared to trouble the batsmen, and as in tho first innings Alcßeth failed to get a wicket. Sandman was the best bowler of the innings, and the batsmen could not do much with him except by taking risks. Evans, who should have been tried very much earlier, got tho best Ixiwljng figures, besides breaking up a dangerous partnership. The Canterbury fielding was again first class. In Canterbury’s second innings Patrick showed some of his old-time form in getting his 6S not out, and it was his partnership with Evans that made the game safe. The Canterbury skipper showed very sound defence, but took some risk with his scoring shots. Ho gave the innings a good start with a very soundly played 32. The Otago outcricket was again good, except that early in Canterbury’s second innings theifl tactics were faulty, in that the first 80 runs contained 40 extras. Carlton was tho steadiest of tho bowlers, and his three for 82 was more than deserved. Following are the scores: — OTAGO. First innings .’ 221 Second Innings. Shepherd, 1.b.w., b. WAIRARAPA W. BAKER AIAKES A CENTURY. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Masterton, December 27. A team from Wellington played AVairarapa on Cameron .Park to-day in perfect meather. Bruce lost the toss and took the field. At first the fast wicket and outfield bothered the visitors to some extent. A good partnership between Miles and Cook took the score from 38 to 135. The former was lucky, being bowled by a no-ball from Carruthers when ho had scored only a few runs. Alartin worried the later batsmen and came out with a fair average. Baker batted attractively and without giving a chance. Wairarapa. Gallon, st. Baker, b. Alartin 17 parr, b. Carruthers 8 Miles, 1.b.w., b. Hutchinson 55 Cook, c. Baker, b.
