THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS

LYALL BAY SCHOOL. The "break-up” concerts and prize-giving of the I,yoll Bay School took place yesterday afternoon. The hall was packed at both. , concerts, a large number of friends and parents being present. The chairman (Mr. A. Sando)' addressed the scholars, and in the course of his remarks laid particular stress on iiatriotism and civio duty. He urged the scholars'to so comport themselves that in after life they would look back on their school careers as on a well-run race. Certificates were then distributed— 47 for proficiency and 5 for competency, as follow:—

Special awards and prizes were then distributed by the chairman, .ns follow— Dux of school (gold medal), Lovdy H. Chisholm; prox. acc. (Airs. Robertson s prizes), Colin Taylor and Rewia Chorley (equal); special prize (gold medal from anonymous donor) for most marks in proficiency examination, Colin Taylor; special prize for scholar, Standard VI, showing most progress (anonymous donor), John Little. Sports prizes (additional to Monday’s distribution)—For best batting average (bat presented I>y L. H. Arcus, Esq.). H. Hands; girls’ championship (gold brooch), Jean Taylor; boys’ championship (silver medal). O. Best: consolation race (trophy donated by H. Ppce, Esq.). W. Dustin. 1 (inkstand); D. Dustin 2. Young Helpers’ League (Barnar’do Homes)— Badges for three years’ membership, Zealot Martin, Irene Boyd, and Afelville Murray; silver knives (second award) for six years’ memliership, Cyril Sando; Lovdv Chisholm, and Kathleen Brailsford. Attendance records (gold medals donated by Mesdames Whitehead and Hutchison), A. Williams and B. Paddison. On behalf of Standard VI scholars Lovdy Chisholm presented a gold-mounted pen to Air. C. Robertson, first assistant teacher, who feelingly responded. , The headmaster complimented _ the scholars on their excellent behaviour, especially at the picnic and “break-up ceremony. Cheers were given for the donors of prizes, for the headmaster (Mr. A. C. Blake), and the teaching staff, and the gathering closed with the singing of the National Anthem. At the concerts which preceded the prize-giving the ecliolars acquitted themselves well, and received well-merited applause for their items. For their excellent performanee much credit is due to Afiss F. G. Roberts and the teachers, notably Misses Reith, Stacey, Stitt, and Wilson. KAIWARRA.
