RECIPROCAL TARIFF
BETWEEN NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA THE BRITISH PREFERENTIAL RATES TO APPLY By Telegraph— Press Association—Copyright (Rec. November 9, 9.40 p.m.) Melbourne, December 9. A proposal, enabling the Government to give preference to New Zealand by proclamation, in accordance with a reciprocal tariff arrangement, was passed through all stages in the House of Representatives. The Minister of. Customs explained that negotiations had been proceeding with the Dominion Government for some weeks, and they had practically come to an agreement that New Zealand should concede Australia the British preferential rates, the Commonwealth reciprocating similarly. As the Commonwealth would get a much greater advantage than New Zealand, it was eminently desirable that the agreement should be ratified. Upon the conclusion of the negotiations the agreement would be ratified by proclamation, but until they were satisfied that New Zealand would extend the same - treatment to Australia as Australia was extending to her the proclamation- would not be issued. —Press Assn.
