Licut.-Commandcr Tonge returned to Wellington on furlough.by the Ulimaroa after having completed seven years' active service in Central Africa. He is the senior naval officer-in-charge of Fort Johnston, Lake Nyassa. The lake is 350 miles long, and during the war Commander Tonge was in charge of the line of communications for the naval forces, which chased von Letter. Ho (was jnentioned in dispatches for conspicuous and gallant services. He returns to Central Africa in March next. News was received in "Wellington by cablegram yesterday of the death, at Shanghai, China, of Mr. Fred" Awdry, only son of Mrs. J. B Awdry, of Selwyn Terrace, Wellington. The late Mr. Awcjty, who was 23 years of age, was on the literary staff of The Dominion for some years, but left about foutejrears ago for America, leaving a couple of years later for a trip to the East. Some months apo he returned to Wellington with the intention of starting a Shipping Gazette here, but gave the idea up to go to China, where he joined the stnff of the Hong-Kong "Telegraph.” Six months later he left’ for Shanghai to take up a better appointment Upon the "Shanghai Times.” No news has as yet been received as to the cause of death. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. McGrath left for Sydney 'by the Ulimaroa yesterday. Mr. C, D’Arcy Allen, managing director of the British and Continental Film Co.. Ltd;, has returned to Wellington after a two months' trip to Australia, whom ho has been for the purpose of establishing branches of his company in Sydney and Melbourne. '■ As a mark of esteem, (he 41 workmen employed on the building of St. Mary of (lie Angels' Church, Bouleott Street, presented a roller-top desk to Father Mahoney yesterday. The presentation was mndo as indicating the respect and friendship of the men for their employer.
