The sub-committee of tho Amalgamated Engineering Union 'has reported as under regarding the Rent Restrictions Act: —“In view of the benefits conferred on the workers throughout the Dominion by' tho passing of Uie Rent Restriction Act, and being fully alive to the dreadful Ihaa-dships that would result from its removal at a time when the housing problem is so acute owing to the competition that would take place, we, the Amalgamated Engineering (Inion, in conference assembled, representing 4060 workers, • deplore tho misleading' statement of the Farmers’ Union to the effect that in the interest of the community this Act should be removed, protest cpiI>hatically against such tactics adopted to benefit tho landlords and estate agents, and call upon our representatives in the House to oppose with all the power at their disposal the removal of the Rent Restrictions Act. We also deplore the propaganda engaged in by the Farmers’ Union to build up their own organisation whilst agitating for the elimination of the preference clause from all workers' unions’ awards. Also the erroneous comparison ppt forward by' the Christchurch agricultural implement manufacturers concerning wages i-n New Zealand and Australia. Their statement was to tho effect that wages wero the same in both countries, whilst the actual position is that wages in Australia are £6 per week of 44 hours and in New Zealand they are only £5 Is. 9d. per week of 44 hours.”
