NOTES AND COMMENTS

By Glencoe. •

Acceptances for the "Woodville .meeting close on Friday next. This gives owners a chance to see the form of their horses at Feilding before being called upon to accept for other engagements. The thoughtfulness of the Woodville stewards is not likely to lose it any support. Th© Takapuna meeting will conclude to-day when racing will commence at 11.45 a.m.

Tho Waituna Hurdles, ono mile and three-quarters, is tlhe' opening event at Feilding to-day, and it is tinned to start at 11.30 a.m. Ore Ore, list. 51b., las now got a good horse’s weight, and niay not prove equal to it. Kipling, lOst. lib., has been placed in his last seven starts without winning a ra,ce. He is consistent enough, but will have a strango rider in the saddle to-day, and this may not help him. There is every likelihood of a big field in the Trial Plate, six furlongs, and half of tlhern will bo unable to give their supporters a run at all, for tho course is all too small for such a field. Tho well-backed division will include Big Chief, Cochineal, Solstice, and Panache.

There are eleven acceptors in the St. Andrew’s Handicap, one mile and a half. Pluto, Bonetter, and Kilgour may all be heavily backed, and the issue may be confined to the two last-named. Both are good performers on a soft track, and both have brilliant runs at the finish. There may hot bo much, of a margin between them at the finish. Tho Kowhai Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, has an acceptance of twentythree hacks, but none of them are of much account. Zircon, 7st. 121 b., may be as good as any of them, and March On, 7st. 21b., was noticed shaping well over this distance at Ashhurst. The open sprint event has a field of twenty-one horses, and any one of them seems capable of winning. Tho draw for places will bo eagerly scanned before investments are made on this race. Asterina -and Martian Miss may both receive attention. The presence of Gloaming) Rational, and Silver Link in the Feilding Stakes will havo the effect of reducing the field. The first-named must be well forward in condition or his trainer would not have sent (him north. He will meet Rational bn exceptionally favourable terms, for tho latter has eai’iied the full penalty. . Colmisia, fist. 111 b., is top-weight m the Fitzroy Hack Flying. She may havo a very big following, as she is such a smart beginner. Another one who leaves the barrier quickly is the Waverley winner, Mixture. , Ngata may have most support in tn© Kiwitea Whiter Handicap, and •there will also be plenty of backing'l’or Holland, w'ho is reported to bo very well present. H When he went to Takapuna with Uncle Ned, S. Reid also took the maiden tl rc-e--year-old colt Steel. Stay-at-home backers supported tho Boniform gelding freely on Saturday, but he was not produced, probably on account of the going. .In the Vauxhall Handicap to-aay he has been given a rise of 181 b., which niay find ’him out before the winning post is reached. , . An Auckland Press Association message notifies an omission from the Bay of Plenty handicaps, which were published yesterday. In the Maiden Hurdiss Birkwind is handicapped nt 9st. 31b.

recently brought him into marked prominence. In a reference to Grand Voyage, who is owned by the Belmont Stud Farm (Victoria), and is driven by the veteran Victorian roinsman, P. B. Glasheen, tho Sydney "Referee" remarked: “Quite the feature of a good day’s sport at Epping was tho form of Grand Voyage (late Bonnio Voyage), an aged black stallion by First Voyage, from Blondo Grattan. This Melbourne visitor, who is no stranger to Epping, is a magnificent stamp of horse, and a square trotter. In winning a Flying division in 2min. Sljsec. he knocked IJsec. off the unhopplod record for the race, established in September, 1916, by that fine pacing mare, Arnie Daly. And in doing so ho showed the fine rate of 2min. 13{sec. He was penalised 2soc. for the Epping Handicap (2min. 22sec.). of 1J miles and 120yd5.., and in beating tho hoppled pacers in 3min. 29Jsec. did lifsec. better than the time of Mountain King, who, last December, dethroned Maori Land as the record holder for the race. And hero he bettered his Flying rate by Jsec., showing 2min. 13sec. dead for tho trip.” Tradesman and Stormy Voyage, who also.hail from Melbourne, are in the same stable as Grand Voyage. Ross Trevor, a straight-out trotter, and ■Dick Dillon are a brnce of horses from New South Wales.
