SATURDAY’S BIG CARNIVAL.
Next Saturday, at the Basin Reserve, will witness the first athletic gathering of the season, and judging by the large number of entries received it should prove to be one of the most successful meetings held here for a long time past. A number of visiting athletes will be present from other centres. Taylor, tho well-known Canterbury crack, is out to break the 1000 yards New Zealand record, and will also be seen in the 220, 400 and mile. G. A. Plummer, of Auckland. who recently put up a new record in the hop. step and jump, will arrive here on Friday, and will make his first appearance before a Wellington public on Saturday, when it will be interesting to see if he will equal his Auckland performance of 4f>ft. 41in. W. J. also of Auckland, holder of the New Zealand broad jump championship, when ho cleared 22ft. BJin„ has also sijmfied his intention of competing. In addition to the broad jump he will compete in the 100 yards and 220 yards, and as he is a "fiver” over these distances he will be closely watched, in view of his appearance the following week a the championships at Christchurch. All the well-known Wellington cracks will be in action, and also Nesdale (Wanganui) and quite a number from Manauatu and Wairarapa, including Candy, 4+o Now Zealand champion; Wyeth, long distances; and Harvey. New Zealand pole vault champion.
