Dominion yesterday (November 29): —“One of the results of the new tariff proposals that Christinas shoppens will not appreciate is that there will nrobablv be a heavy increase in tho cost of perfumes, particularly those iiopular scents, Eau-de-Cologne and lavender wafer, says the "New Zealand Herald." A considerable quantity of the two latter is manufactured locally, and one maker Jias announced that, his prices will go ur> immediately This stop has boon taken by. reason of the increased duty on the rectified spirit used in the manufacture. One. very wellknown French firm have announced that there is to bo no increase in the price of their goods, as they will nay the. increased duty. It is considered very doubtful, however, if British and foreign firms will tjj£o the same stand. It is"expected that the new tariff will result in a general increase in the retail ccist of all perfumes of from 15 to 20 per cent, as a minimum, the authorities having the right to assess duty either lithe gallon or on the Invoice vrice. whichever yields the highest amount.” The very well-known firm referred to in the above paragraph is L.
