PUBLIC SCHOOLS’ ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Wellington Public Schools’ Lawn Tennis Association was attended by 19 delegates—a record attendance. Mr. J. C. Thwaites occupied the chair. The annual report states that tho 17th annual tournament was held on the Brougham Hill, Wellington, and Lcwer Hutt Clubs’ courts in December laM. Excellent entries .(426) were received for the various events, the finals of whi:h, played at Brougham Trill on December 13, resulted as follow: — Primary.—Girls’ championship singles: M. Lee (Hutt DILI.); girls’ championship doubles: M. Lee and B. Styles (liiiti D.H.); boys* championship singles: li. Ferkins (I. (Bay), boys’ championship doubles: R. Ferkins and Thomas <l. Bay); combined championship double-: R. Firkins and G. Hunter (I. Bay).

Sscondary.—Girls’ championship tingles: J. Prydc (Hutt D.H.); girls’ cli'inipionship doubles: J. Pryde and K. Edwards (Hutt JI.II.); boys’ championship singles: N. Sutton (Tech. Coll); boys’ championship doubles: Worthy and Jenkins (Tech. Coll.); combined championship doubles: N. Sutton and A. Asher (Tec. Coll.). The attendance at the finals was very satisfactory, the best since the inception of the tournaments. Island Bay, with six points, won the Ferguson Cup. Hunt D.H.S., with four points, being runnersup. The Grady Cup for secondary events, was again won by Technical College, Hutt D.H.S., with four points, again occupying the position of runnersup. At the conclusion of the even’s the trophies were presented to the win nets by the patron, Mr. T. Forsyth, who was welcomed by the president, Mr.\ C. Haslam. The committee places on record its best thanks to the following:—To Mr. and Mrs. J. A. B. Howe, whose twonderful enthusiasm in connection with schools’ tennis remains unabated; to Mr. W. E. Howe, who has umpired in about four hundred school championship matches; to the Brougham Hill, Wellington, and Lower Hutt Clubs for use of courts; to the Wellington Provincial and New Zealand Lawn Tennis Associations for "handsome donations towards our funds; to Miss Fraser and the Sixth Standard girls from the Terrace School for assuming control of the refreshment pavilion; to Mr. W. J. Melody for a donation of one and a half guineas; and to the Press. . ■ The committee states that it feels ju - tifiably proud of the fact that two past school champions, namely, Miss Nancy Curtis and Miss Arita Howe last year, carried off tho blue ribands of the New Zealand ladies’ tennis world by winning the senior and junior singles championships respectively. Hearty congratulations are extended to Misses Curtis and Howe on their splendid achicvomenus. Tho committee Particularly mourns tho loss of ono of its most esteemed past-members, and a pioneer of the schools’ tennis movement, the late Mr. G. McMorran, whose services to school sport had been as lengthy ns they had been valuable. During the year Miss S. Fraser, one of our most efficient coaches, capable administrators, and willing workers, retired on superannuation. Their many times president and genial cnthusias (Mr J. H. Worhovs) was about to do likewise; whilst their worthy president (Mr. C. N. Haslam had been transferred to' the' Canterbury inspectorate. The loss of three of their strongest supporters was undoubtedly a very severe one. , , Tho committee offers its hearty congratulations to Mr. C. N. Haslam on hi« nromo+ion to the inspectorate, also to Mr. W. H. Stainton on his election as honorary secretary of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association. The committee is of the opinion tha the time has corn 0 when they can no longer expert to ho •denendant on the rrnorosity of the Brougham Hill and Wdlte'rin clubs for the use of courts, and feel that the moment is opportune for approaching the City Council with a view to having a nart of one of the citv reserves set aside for the use o tho thousand and wore school tennis players- whose activities at present are so restricted on account of the dearth of courts.
