THE TURF

THE TAKAPUNA MEETING UNCLE NED WINS ALISON CUP. By Telegraph—Special Correspondent. Auckland, November 26. Notwithstanding the showery and unpleasant weather there was a very large attendance to witness the first day’s racing of the Takapuua Jockey Club’s spring meeting. Rain fell during the night and morning, hud there were some heavy showers during the afternoon. In consequence the going was heavy. There was a very big field in the Melrose Handicap, Loch Abbey being the best backed, whilq Wrangel and Lord Star also had a good following. There was a false start, and half of th® big field completed the course, Wrangle winning. However, they were lined up again, and this time Lord Star rushed to the front, and led into the straight. Here Wanigan headed him, but over the final pinch Lady Patience finished, strongly, and won comfortably from (Wanigan, Pengwen was right up, and then came Gwenette. Royal Fancy shaped the best of the others. Illumination was a good favourite in the Borough Handicap, and though the Australian-bred horse drew a , bad marble, he began smartly, and was in behind Namutere and King Abbey to the bottom stretch. Here tho latter foil back, and the favourite joined Namutere. Esthonia came fast in. the straight, but could not reach the favourite, who won by a couple of lengths. Namutere was half a length: away, and then came Arch Salute and Scrap o Paper. Heathermoon and Navana fell after going a furlong, and the ill stnamed was killed. ' Approach (E. Copestake) was the be st backed in the Ponui Hurdles, for which a big field went to the post. At the first fence Stirrup Cup and Roller fell, and the favourite came down at the next fence. Romance led out of the straight and down the back,, where Crowhurst moved up. The pair jumped the last fence together, and in a great finish Crowhurst won by a head. Otara was a poor third. Glen Canny was the only scratching for the Alison Cup, Gold: Kip being favourite. He began well, and, with Rockfield, led past the stand. Across the top Royal Abbey joined Rockfielcl, and the pair led down the back from Gold Kip. Across the' bottom Stork rushed to the front, and he was first into the straight, but Uncle Ned then came fast, and in the run homo won very comfortably. Royal Abbey finished well in third place., and then came Penona and Insurrection. Ad Astra, Refinement, and Uncle Alex all carried over four figures in the Two-year-old Handicap.- Shebang and Uncle Alex were the quickest to begin, but Ad Astra showed a lot of pace, and led into the straight, alongside of Uncle Alex. The latter finished the best, and won ’ comfortably from Refinement and Miss June. Shebang and Ad Astra were close un. Twenty horses faced the starter m the Ngataringa Handicap. Kilwana was the public fancy, but several of tho others were well supported. When the field settled down Some Fashion made his way to the front, and at the home bend lie was well clear of the field, and won comfortably by three lengths. Te Akitai just managed to beat Dactylis for second place. Hyginas, Paonui, and Loyal Arch were tho popular selection for the Tiri Hurdles. The race resolved itself into a battle between Hyginas and Killard. Hyginas took command three furlongs from home, but Killard hung on to him gamely. They jumped tho last hurdle side by tide, but in the run down the straight (Hillard wore the top-weight down, and won by nearly a length. Otara was third, several lengths behind. Tho Cheltenham Handicap resulted in a very close finish. Dovelet, tho favourite, was well placed from the start, and was in the front\division throughout the race. Leithfield looked like a winner at one stage, but closed up suddenly. Dovelet, Pavo, and Infante fought a great battle up the straight Dovelet winning by barely a head. The sum of £68,965 10s. was put through tho totali9ator, .against £67,836 10s. for tho corresponding day last year. Results:
