STARVED AND BEATEN
ENGLISHMEN ILL-TREATED BY SPANIARDS. (Rec. November 26, 5.5 p.m.) London, November 25. Fifty-three haggard clad in odds and ends of clothing and widecollared green shirts and boots of ropo and canvas, and looking like. starved brigands, have arrived from Spain. They are° the survivors of a secretly-recruited English contingent of tho Spanish Foreign Legion. They confirm previous statements as to their ill-treatment, and add: “Just because we couldn t understand tho Spanish words of command we were beaten with rifle-butts slashed with whips, and tied to posts. Wo wrote complaining to the Premier at Kenworthy. Our release soon followed. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
