THE MACARTHY HOME

AN EXPENSIVE LEGACY DISCUSSED BY HOSPITAL BOARD Once more was the T.G. Macarthy Home for Convalescent Children discussed by the Hospital Board on Thursday, when Mr. A. J. McCurdy moved: “That the special sub-committee (consisting of three members each of the Hospital and Social Welfare Committees, with the chairman of the Hospital Board) entrusted with the management of the Macarthy Convalescent Home be discharged, and that tho system in operation in Dr. Barclay's term be reverted to; that is to say, that the management of the Macarthy Home be entrusted to the medical superintendent and two advisers (the chairman of tile Hospital Board and tho member representing the district in which the Macarthy Home is situated being such advisers), the superintendent and his advisers to report to the Hospital Committee at lease monthly." Mr. McCurdy said that the practice of controlling the home by a, special committee had not proved satisfactory. Very little work had been done upon the place. It was only after the last visit of the committee in September that any improvement had been made at all as far as outside work at the home was concerned. Calculating the time worked at eight hours a day, 48 hours had been occupied in digging every square yard, and the man who had dug eight yards in four hours for Mr. Tniebridge, at the Ohiro Home, had “lost the belt” to the man at the Macarthy Home. Mr. McCurdv further stated that the thirteen weeks’ “work” of one man and the five weeks of another had cost kthe board 475 and during that time a piece of ground 45ft. by 66ft. had been dug up and sown in carrots. M ith such a condition of things, he thought that the old order should be reverted to by vestin'' the control in the superintendent, the chairman, and the board member for the district (himself). Mr Butler seconded the motion. Mr' G. Nash said that when lie was out at the home lately the grass was •3ft high. At the last meeting of the committee it was understood that MrHealy was to go out each month and report. Since then things at the home had been better managed. „ "Sir I feel hurt over this mat let, said Mr W. Cotton. “I <lon t agree with, anything Mr. McCurdy fcas said, and I will not support him in an ything ho does.
