HUTT HIGH SCHOOL BOARD

INAUGURAL MEETI-NG. The inaugural meeting of the Hutt High School Board was held in the Education Board’s offices on Wednesday, when there wjre present the following representatives:—Messrs. E. P. Rishworth, J. W. McE wan, and G. T. London (Education Board), Dr. W. Kerr Hislop and Mr. 11. G. Teagle (Government). Mr. H. Baldwin (representing the nearest borough) is absent from the Dominion. Mr. Rishworth was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Pending the appointment of a permanent secretary, Mr. London will carry out the duties in an honorary capacity. The secretary of the Education Department wix>te advising that a site consisting of 18 acres, fronting Woburn Road, with an entrance from ’White’s Line, which had been purchased two years ago, was now available whenever required for the new building. In the meantime it was being used for grazing purposes, the rental from which amounted to X's. Although it would probably be some time (owing to the present financial position), the writer pointed out, before a grant would bo available for tho erection, the board should institute preliminary inquiries regarding the probable number of pupils that would attend, and also discuss with the Department suitable plans and estimates. If desired, the Department would consider the handing over- of the revenue from the school site to the board to aid it in its preliminary expenditure. Until such time as the school was opened the board would be placed in the same position as other high school boards, and would receive from the Department allowances for payment of sal- 1 aries and incidental expenses. It was decided to make an endeavour to have the high school work carried on temporar/v, pending the erection of the necessary buildings, and that the board wait as a deputation on the Director of Education early next week with a view to discussing the full details concerning the buildings, staffing, and scheme of control. It was decided to elect the three members representing parents of pupils as soon ns the school was established and tho scholars were enrolled.

The next meeting is to be hold on December 14 and thereafter on the days on which the Education Board meets.
