PROBATION GRANTED
COMMENT BY MAGISTRATE.
By Telegraph--Brees Association. Auckland, November 25.
Ida Newman, a young married woman, who admitted several charges of obtainipg goods by what is known as the “telephone trick.” this morning pleaded guilty to a further charge. Air. Poynton. S.M., said “I am afraid probation is being abused. However, the Supreme Court grants it, and T suppose we must follow its direction. The Supreme Court the other day gave probation to a man who stole a large sum of money from his employers. I think in this case I might stretch a point. To .imprison the woman might endanger her little hoy. I place her on probation for the. longest term five vears—and older restitution to the extent, of £43 12s. 2d."
