THE ANGLICAN CHURCH

OPPOSITION IN SYDNEY TO NEXUS

PROPOSAL. I Sydney, November 25. Th? Synod of Sydney Diocese discussed the appointment of a committee to consider the draft determination respecting the nexus question. Several speakers- opposed the nexus proposal as it meant paving the way to cut the painter. The debate was adjourned.— Press Assn. [The legal nexus proposal was considered by the General Synod of the Anglican dioceses iu Australia and.. Tasmania, which met in Sydney recently. The actual meaning of the proposal ivas made plain by the Bishop of Bathurst (Dr. Long) in an interview published in the Sydney “Sun." “The motion before Svnod'," he said, “provides for the extension of the powers of management and government of the Anglican Church in Australia. That means, if agreed to. that wc take power at. any time, or from time to time, to change .the name of the Church, to remodel the prayerbook and the standards and forms of faith and worship, and/to establish a tribunal in Australia for the interpretation of the doctrines of th? Church, instead of the present necessity to go to the authorities in England. If is really a sort of Dominion Home Rule for the Church in Australia. Most of the other Dominions have it in much the. same form ns wo propose. That wo are tied up now is entirely the result ot our own -decision in the early days of the Church in what were then colonies, and the Lamlmth Conference has now urged us lo fake these nowers for ourselves. Assuming that the present Synod approves of the suggestion, it wilt then bo taken to the dioceses of every State for ratification. If two-thirds of the State dioceses affirm the decision, it will come back for final confirmation to tho next General Svnod (usually held every five and all the State Governments will ho formally asked "to vary (he trusts of th' Church to allow the wider powers. That will b= the whole of the. procedure —the linglish , authorities will not bo consulted at all.”]
