DIRECT WIRELESS
BETWEEN BRITAIN AND AUSTRALIA SCHEME SUBMITTED TO FEDERAL PARLIAMENT (Rec. November 25, 11.15 p.m.) Melbourne, November 25. In the House of Representatives a draft of the proposed agreement between the Commonwealth and Amalgamated Wireless, as outlined by Mr. E. T. Fisk, providing for direct" commercial wireless communication between Britain and Australia," was laid on the table. The proposed charges are: Full rate messages, 2s. per word; deferred, Is.; week-end messages, 6d.; Government messages, Is,; Press, 5d.; deferred Press, 3d. The company Undertakes to commence local construction forthwith, and provide main trunk stations in Australia and Britain within two years, also a. statibii in Canada capable of communication" with the highpower station in Australia. Mr. Hughes stated that the scheme Was an alternative to the link scheme submitted to the Imperial. Conference. The Government was not committed in any way to th? scheme, which the House would be given a chance to discuss later. ’—Press Assn. ' [Mr/ Fisk, on behalf of Amalgamated Wireless, Limited, in an address at the National Club, Sydney, a few days ago, sajd that the cheapening of communication with the | rest of the world would cost a million, of which Amalgamated Wireless had .£450,000. The company desired the Commonwealth to subscribe the balance and. take control. He promised to give a first-class service at onethird less per word than by cable. Mr. Fisk added that the Commonwealth, besides possessing a powerful plant, would be saved the present annual deficit of .£60,000.] - •'
