GAS FOR EASTBOURNE
4 QUESTION OF PETONE SUPPLY. The matter of gas supply from Petone to the Eastbourne borough was discussed at a meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council last night. A report received from thte Petone Borough Council stated that probably, out of five hundred houses in the Eastbourne borough, three hundred might become consumers. In Petone, where there wen? 1500 consumers, thirty-five million cubic feet were used. A safe estimate for Eastbourne was that about one-fifthi of that amount would bo used in the borough. The report added that sufficient pressure could not bo given from Petone, and tho erection of . a holder at Eastbourne—seven and a half miles from Petone—would cost .£13,800, the holder being provided with a sixtnch main. It would not bo satisfactory. Another method, for high pressure, would be the installation of compressing works, with smaller mains, a a cost of about .CGSOO. The 'Mayor stated that all were interested in the hydro-electric scheme, which would probably be in force in alxmt three years. It had been emphasised that there should be no rivalry between gas and electricity. It was decided to request the general manager to bring down a report on the matter.
