NOTES AND COMMENTS
Br Glbncok,
'(.’he Takapumi meeting will open today, when big fields will be seen out in all the events. The racing track is a circular one, and the honfes fortunate enough to draw the inside positions have a big advantage, in the sprint events. Uncle Ned, Insurrection, and Roj'at Abbey are (ill well fancied for tho Alison Cup. The last-named is well treated, and at his best he would be very difficult to dispose of. Included in the field for tho Tiri Hurldies is Hyginas, who had a runaway victory at Ellerslie, and is now raised 121 b. He is regarded as remarkably well handicapped, which: accounts for the big falling out of oiher horses.
Dovelet and Leithfield, both smart beginners, inay z be well fancied for the Cheltenham Handicap, six furlongs, and Ad Astra. (Absurd—Paean) is reported to have shown some very smart trial gallops before leaving Findings. She is very well handicapped with 7st. filb. Wisewood. winner of the Chesterfield Plato at the Q.T.C.’s meeting on. November 9. is I>y imported Scremond, from the Chokebcre-bred Wisebird. IT. Cairns and Stan Reid are leaving Melbourne for Auckland on December W, and they will do the Auckland Cup
and Wellington Cup fixtures before returning to Victoria. The stallion Woorak is putting up a great record as a sire of winning two-year-olds, and already in his first season four of his progeny have won races. It is expected that his stock will bring big prices at the yearling sales in ths autumn. , . Dr. Ring visited the Waikato during the week, and operated on the fhree-year-old Royal Box. The sou of Nassau has made a wonderful recovery from the injuries he met with some months ago at Ellerslie, and it is now practically certain that he will race again, although it may not be this season. Evidently Maioha has made a good recovery from the mishap which came against him on the eve of the Canterbury J.C. meeting, for he has been nominated fqr the principal events at the Woodville fixture. Starland, who has not claimed the attention of the judge since he led the field home in the Takapuna Cup lias. January, is down for. on engagement in the Alison Cup io-day, in which race he figures at Sst. 81b. —21b. below the top weight, Uncle Ned. The Auckland Cup candidates Paonnui, Molyneaux, Admiral Codrington, Penitent, Vagabond, Maioha, and Aureate figure among the nominations for the principal events at the Woodville meeting. The South Canterbury meeting will be continued to-day. A Press Association message received last evening stated that rain had set in. P. Mason, with Pluto and Gloaming, passed through Wellington yesterday on the way to Fei'ding. The first-named horse looks very well, but the champion appears to be la- bit on the light side.
