BURGLARS ABOUT
HAIDS ON HATAITAI HOMES ALARM AMONG RESIDENTS . A number of burglaries occurred during the past week in the Hataitai district—so many that • some of the lady residents are in a state of alarm. On returning home from town at about 10.10 p.m. on Thursday, Mrs. G. Jeffery, of Huia Street, found ihe bqck and front doors wide open, and on. investigation discovered that the house had been rartsackod. Ewery firawcr had bgen pulled out, and the contents were either disturbed or strewn on the floor; no clothing of any kind' was removed, but the little money (under »£1) that was left in the house was taken, with some odds and ends of jewellery. It Was fortunate that on that particular evening Mrs. Jeffery had lent, her most valuable jewellery to her daughter (Miss Hazel Jeffery), who was appearing in an amateur performance of "Jane,’’ otherwise her loss might have been a rather serious one. What has alarmed Mrs. Jeffery and others considerably is tho fact that, whilst the constable nt Kil.birnie and the police in town were advised' of the affair, no official 'had. up till Saturday morning, been near tho place to make any inquiries. The residence of Mr, Townsend, also of, Hataitai,- was entered during last week, and there again a sum of money Was taken, and the placed turned topsyturvy by the intruders in the search for something which could be readily converted into cash. Another burglary took place nt the hoiiso of Mr. L. A. Clark, of Wainapa Road, under conditions similar to those related above, and marauders also ransacked the residence of Mr. W. R Bock, at Hataitai, during the absence of members of the family.
