* A CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER
STATEMENT BY ACCUSED _ 1. By Telwanh.—Press Association. Hastings, November 11. At the inquest on the child Arthur Allen, aged (JJ years, who was.killcd by being struck by a motor-ca? on the afternoon of November 2, the police banded in a statement by Morgan Davies, farmer, residing at Napier, haying that he had had a considerable amount of liquor before leaving Napier, but ho wished to make a voluntary statement as to what he remem tiered while driving through. Hastings. He said that from the first he had no intention of lisguising anything, and ha did not know why he did not seethe child till he struck him. Possibly it was because the child was keeping to the proper side of the road. llio shock at seeing the child down horrified him, and after going a ’bit further he looked back, and saw tho child on tho road. He remembered no more till he reached Hastings and transacted some business. He had a hazy recollection of stopping at Greenmeadows. The car would not start, and a. friond drove him to Napier. He saw an account, of the accident in tho papers, and probably felt it was too late to.do anything. On Friday, November 4, he began to realise 11 is position, and went to a solicitor, who was away for tho day. Another sleepless night’ followed. He could mot face it. Everybody would realise that Jc was an accident, but whether it was shock, or what, ho did not know what made him keep going. A charge of manslaughter was laid, nnd accused was remanded to appeal at Napier on Monday. , Bail was allowed accused in £5OO and two sureties of £2W each. ... , Bevies is a married man with foin children. and in good circumstances. The affair has caused a great deal of in terest in tho district.
