STUDENTS AT PLAY
SPORTS DAY AT WELLINGTON COLLEGE HIGH STANDARD OF ATHLETICS That the curriculum of Wellington College provides for the development of sinews as well as brains was amply proved yesterday, when, the animal sports meeting was held in tho College grounds. It was an inspiring sight to see the students, physically fit enough every one of them to almost jump over the mepn, etraining forward towards the goals throughout the day in a series of athletic contests which brought every muscle into play. That the college is particularly strong, in athletics was proved by the very large fields which entered in every event, it being necessary to divide some of the competitions up into 'as many as twelve and thirteen heats. The standard of athletics was well maintained, and the form displayed was of a very high standard, and the many brilliant ' individual feats .of prowess performed time and again, called up very hearty applause from the large crowd of spectators who ringed the arena. A distinctly praiseworthy effort was the long jump by F. Hanan, a lad of 14 years of age, who cleared 18ft. sin., exactly the same distance as was oovered lin the senior eiontest. The. sprint events, which were run against the wind, provided close finishes, and the good times registered proved that the students had trained assiduously for [ the events. The sports were excellently i managed, and the strong set of officials (knew their work so well that there was ino delay throughout tho day, events following each other sr> rapidly that puplic interest was never allowed to flag for a minute. Tho most notable performance of the day was that put up by E. I’. Spencer, the head of the school,. in ...winning the 440 yards in 55 l-ssec., thus breaking the record put up by F. W. B. Gcodbehere in 1905, by two-fifihy of a second. E. P. Spencer also won the Lord Ranfurly Cup for most points in the long jump, high jump (open), and 120 yards hurdles championship; E, A.
