- FINANCIAL DEBATE THE PROPOSALS FOR RETRENCHMENT DEVELOPMENT OF KAURI GUM INDUSTRY The Legislative Council yesterday passed the Land Tax Amendment Bill, x authorising the ten per cent, rebate for the prompt payment of land tax. The Council adjourned until Wednesday next. Ministers’ answers to questions were circulated in the House of Representatives in the afternoon. A consolidating Death Duties Bill and an amending Native Trustee Bill were introduced in the House. The report of the Kauri Gum Commission was presented, and was discussed at some length. The debate on the Financial Statement was opened in the evening. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr. W itford) assailed the Government, and moved an adverse amendment. He charged the Government with extravagance and lack of policy. < , The Hon. C. J. Parr, in the course of a speech in reply, made an Important reference to retrenchment in the Civil Service. The debate was adjourned until to-day.
