WELSH COAL
IMPORTATION WAS NECESSARY. Mr. H. E. Holland (Buller) recently quoted in tho House a statement that Welsh coal used by the Railway Department on the Rimutaka Incline had proved drossy and unsatisfactory. He asked tlie Minister of Railways for statistics bearing on the relative prices and tho relative calorific values of tho \\ elsh and New Zealand coals. » Tho Minister of Railways (Hon. D. H. Guthrie) yesterday stated: "Welsh coal has been ‘used on the Rimutaka Incline tor several weeks past with very satisfactory results. Its calorific value is known to bo from 25 to 30 per cent, better than other coals used on the railnays'. Tho New Zealand mines have never at any time been able to supply full requirements to tho Railway p?psvrtment of hard coal, consequently tho Department has for many years past had to import ooal to supplement local supplies to meet requirements, and during the past five years has been almost dependent on outside sources for supplies because of tho impossibility of obtaimn„ coal within tho Dominion.
