UNEMPLOYMENT
DISTRESS AMONG CORNISH TIN MINERS 78 PER CENT. OF RATEPAYERS IDLE By TelegTaph—Press Association—Copyright (Rec. November 9, 8.15 p.m.) London, November 9. The distress and destitution among Cornish miners due to tho closure of all the tin mines owing to the prohibitive price of coal was discussed in the House of Commons on Tuesday, Sir Alfred Mond declaring that if tho mines continue to remain closed thb Government will have to consider a scheme to transfer the miners and their dependants to another part of the country where suitable employment is available. The proposal is regarded as unsatisfactory in Cornwall, where it is pointed out that 'the tin miners are unable to find work as ooal miners, firstly because it is a different class of work, and, secondly, because 189,000 colliers arc already unemployed. Twelve thousand are affected in Cornwall, and have been unemployed in some cases for more than a year. The least period of unemployment ha's been nine months. It is estimated that 78 per cent, of the Cornish ratepayers are unemployed.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. THE SYDNEY CONFERENCE SPECIAL LOAN FOR PUBLIC WORKS RECOMMENDED. (Rec. November 9, 9.15 p.m.) Sydney, November 9. At the conference of employers and employees held- to attempt to solve the problem of unemployment, motions by the employers recommending the Government to raise a special loan for public works and urging the advisableness of railway extension and water conservation were carried on the chairman’s casting rote. The workers, in opposing tho motion, stated that if the employers could not suggest anything better than public works to relieve unemployment, they would not have one member of the organised workers behind them. A motion by tho men suggesting full sustenance to all unemployed for whom the Government was unable to provide work was held over. —Press Assn.
