S.P.C.A. ANNUAL REPORT. The twenty-eighth annual report of the AVellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals states that another year of useful work and successful progress had to be recorded. The society had stiea-dijly' carried out tho double purpose, which it ever kept in view, of enforcing the law for the protection of animals, and promoting by all possible means the growth of an enlightened public opinion on tlie subject. Special attention had been devoted to the teaching of the young. Branches of the S.P.C.A. junior league had been formed in a number of schools in tho AVellington district, and their total membership now exceeded. 600, while applications were still coming in from others eager to join. By the kindness of a subscriber the society was enabled to offer prizes annually for the best essays on "Kindness to Animals,” to bo coiffpoted for by pupils of schools in the AVellington Education District. The cases of ill-treatment, etc:,"dealt with by' the inspector during the past year numbered 238. There .were 17 eases of gross cruelty brought before the Court and in fifteen instances penalties had been inflicted, the other two informations being dismissed. An Animals ■Protection and Game Bill was now before Parliament, two items of which dealt with the coursing of hares and the shooting of pigeons from traps. The einrim-ittee: hvas endeavouring to have these two forms of “sport” prohibited. Thev were also watching with. interest the effort of the British Parliament to deal with the question of performing animals.

The annual meeting of the society is to bo held on Tuesday, at 4 p.m.. In .the Chamber of Commerce room. Customhouse Quay. A cordial invitation is extended to ell interested in the work of the society to be present.
