TECHNICAL COLLEGE BOARD

MR. W. H. BENNETT REAPPOINTED CHAIRMAN. The first meeting of the new Technical College Board was held on Tuesday. There were present: Mrs. Hannah, Messrs. L. R. Partridge, T. Ballinger, T. Forsyth, C. H. Chapman, H. Bolton, J. O. Shetland, J. Barras, and AV. Pascoe. Mr. AV. H. Bennett (at present absent in Australia) was re-elected chairman, and Air. L. R. Partridge was appointed deputy-chairman, i The following committees were appointed:—Finance committee, the whole board; building’ committee, Messrs. T. Ballinger, W. A. Bennett, H. Bolton, F. J. Clarke, T. Forsyth, J. Barras, and C. A. Lawrence; standing committee, Messrs. G. L. Stewart, J. O. Shorland, C. H. Chapman, T. Ballinger, AV. H. Bennett, H. Bolton, T. Forsyth, C. A. Lawrence, AV. Pascoe. The director, in his report, stated:—

"Callender Memorial Scholarships.— The Public Trustee, in accordance with the request of the board, modified l the conditions under which these are to be awarded, so that .in future instead of being limited to one section only of our day students and evening school apprentices, they are open to all between the ages of fifteen and twenty-one who are faking up a craft —whether art, or domestic, or industrial —and who are returning to college for a further course of study. Owing to tho character ,of the conditions previously laid down, the competition for these scholarships in the past has been small, but they will now bo open to a much wider range of students, and will effectively carry out the intentions of the generous donor.

“On several occasions I have had to express my appreciation of the active interest taken by membera of the Master Plumbers’ Union in our work. The union recently submitted for our consideration a detailed syllabus in the practice and theory of plumbing spread over a period of five years which had been drawn up with much skill and care, and which after further consideration, is to be suggested, I understand, as a general basis of instruction. The union gives three gold medals annually; two members regularly visit the classes monthly, and report—and, I may add, have made most helpful suggestions—and now they show their interest by thrashing out a scheme of instruction. It is the most striking example of co-opera-tion between school and trade in New Zealand that lam aware of. To crown all, the Master Plumbers’ Union has , made itself responsible for securing support from its members to the new buildings fund, and with marked success. I understand that a sum of more than .£2OO is already in hand, and that it is hoped largely to increase this.

“Industrial Exhibition. —At the request of the Industrial Association arrangements will be made for all our workshops in Mercer Street to be open for inspection while classes are at work, from Monday, October 31, to Thursday, November 3 inclusive, during the second week of the exhibition. AVe hope that many visitors will take advantage of the opportunity to inspect the equipment and students'" work. I regret that we were unable to accede to a further request of the association received a week ago, that we should arrange for a display of work in the Machinery Hall. . . . I would suggest that parents be invited to inspect all departments of the college on November 3, the last evening on which tho workshops will be open to visitors to the exhibition.” The report was adopted.
