When shipwrecks have occurred on the high seas, there frequently have been losses of life among the passengers because or some hitch in lowering lifeboats (observes a writer In the "Sydney Shipping List"). These accidents have resulted from lhe tackle on the davits not working, either causing the boats to bo tipped end up, or to be smashed against the side of the sinking vessel, precipitating the occupants into the water. Inventors and engineers have evolved innumerable devices to eliminate this danger in tho event of disaster, but with varying success. An unsinkable lifeboat has long been sought as the solution of the problem, and a design of this type of craft has now made its appearance which has been successfully dcinionstrated. The boat, which is largo enough to accommodate thirty persons is tho invention of a Dutch engineer. Chief among its features is a. convertible top, which after the boat is loaded with its human cargo, may be closed, entirely covering the deck, making the craft watertight for the launching. Another decided feature is the manner in which this unsinkable boat is launched. Instead of being lowered by mentis of davits, it. is rolled down a chute extending over the side of the ship, which causes it to dive into the water at a safe distance away from the vessel, its passengers being strapped in cushioned seats.
