MANAWATU NOTES
From Our Own Correspondent. Palmerston North, October 24. Quite a change has come over the weather in this district The past few days have been very cold, with heavy rains and occasional showers of sleet, and wintry conditions prevail. At exactly the same period last year there were exceptionally heavy rains, the country was flooded, and the rivers were running bank high. To-morrow is the anniversary of the day on which tho trains were all held up through slips at Whakaronga and in the Manawatu Gorge, and on that occasion it took travellers from Palmerston North over fourteen hours to get through to tho Carterton Show. The outlook for dairy produce would appear to be improving judging by the fact that on Saturday several brands ot factory butter which had been retailing at Is. 9d. to Is. lOd. per lb. were advanced to Is. lid. A good deal of benzine is passing through Palmerston North by motor-lorry from Wellington, and it is stated that it can bo brought up by this means at about =£l per ton cheaper than by the railway. The final of tho Manawatu golf championship (36 holes) was won by A. Ekstedt, 5 up and 3 to play, from C. Clements.
