IWO MEN ATTACK CONSTABLE AT TIMARU A FIERCE STRUGGLE By Telegraph —Press Association. Timaru, October 24. Early yesterday morning, while Constable Fisher was pal rolling Stafford Street, he was suddenly and without warning or provocation set upon savagely by two young men. The constable was passing a. shop when one of the men threw off his coat and dived at him. The constable threw his antagonist, but the other man coining to the assistance of his companion, dealt lhe constable heavy blows from behind. In the struggle the window of the Bristol Piano Company’s premises, valued at .£6O, was broken to atoms. The assailants made good their escape, but were identified by Constable Fisher, and were arrested yesterday, Constable Fisher was severely handled, and lost a considerable amount of blood, but his injuries are not considered serious. The new system of keeping the main street lighted all night proved of great benefit, as it enabled Constable Fisher to identify his assailants.' To-day, James Raymond Walsh, aged twenty-six years, and Arthur Percival Carr, aged twenty-two years, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court, charged with assaulting Constable Fisher. Senior Sergeant Fahey said that the police were collecting evidence, and asked for a remand till Thursday, which was granted. Bail was allowed each accused in £2(10, with sureties amounting to £2OO in each case.
