KARL’S RETURN
WAR OVERSHADOWING CENTRAL EUROPE SLAVS AND RUMANIANS TAKING ACTION MARTIAL LAW DECLARED IN BUDAPEST As a result of ex-Emperor Karl’s return to Hungary war is overshadowing Southern and Central Europe. A diplomatic correspondent says Britain is determined that Karl shall never reign in Hungary again, and that if the * Little Entente finds that war is necessary Britain and the Allied Powers will assist. Already Czecho-Slovakia is reported to be mobilising, while Rumania and JugoSlavia are also taking action. Martial law has been declared in the city. It is semi-officially stated that under the law, Karl cannot in any way exercise the rights of a. October 24, 5.5 p.m.) London, October 23. The "Morning Post’s” Vienna correspondent states that Karl decided on Saturday night to march on Budapest and seize supremo power. A Budapest telegram reports that the Karlists have arrived to within four miles of the capital. They clashed with tho Government troops, whom Admiral Horthy is leading personally, and fighting is proceeding.—Reuter. i FLIGHT OF ADMIRAL HORTHY Paris, October 23. It is reported from Berlin that the Hungarian Regent, Admiral Horthy, has fled from Budapest to Belgrade. In view of Karl’s action, the Government has'decided to take urgent measures.— Aus.-N.Z. The Vienna correspondent of tho "Daily Express" says it is understood that certain Entente Powers, including France, are unlikely to do more than protest against Karl’s return at present. The Vienna correspondent of the Exchange Telegraph reports that the Hungarian Government troops repulsed Karl’s advance guard, consisting of three divisions, at Budener, ten miles from Budapest.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. RUMOURED ENTRANCE OF BUDAPEST DEFECTIONS OF GOVERNMENT TROOPS. (Rcc., October 24, 7.15 p.m.) 1 Vienna, October 23. It is rumoured that Karl has already entered Budapest. Defections of Government troops at various places are reported, including a portion of the Budapest garrison.—Reuter. (Rec. October 21, 9.15 p.m.) Vienna, October 24. A pilot engine preceding the Royal train reached Budapest this morning, but withdrew when an attack was made upon it. A battle hah been proceeding since the morning with Karl’s troops, numbering four thousand soldiers, besides volunteers. Karl and his wife are reported to be in the open country sev-enty-five miles from Budapest. The Government has informed Karl that his presence is impossible. PROTEST FROM GREAT POWERS KARL'S REMOVAL ASKED FOR London, October 23. TTie Hungarian Legation states that the Ministers of tho great Powers have presented a Note to the Hungarian Government asking it to remove Karl from Hungary without bloodshed- The Note emphasises that this is necessary in order t.i safeguard the peace of Europe. Tho Government has replied that it is taking every step to induce Karl to leave. It is stated that the Government, has sufficient force to prevent. Karl’s entry info Budapest. It is supposed that’ Karl has a few thousand troops.—Renter.
BRITAIN’S DETERMINATION
ALLIES PREPARED TO ASSIST LITTLE ENTENTE. (Rec. October 24, 11.30 p.m.) London, October 24
Tho diplomatic correspondent of the “Daily Chronicle” states that Britain is determined that Karl shall never again reign in Hungary, neither shall he return to Switzerland. If the Little Entente finds that war is necessary, Britain and the Allied Powers will assist. —Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn.
FIGHTING STILL PROCEEDING (Roc. October 25, 1.25 a.m.) Vienna, October 23
A message from Budapest states that fighting is still proceeding between the Karlisfs and the Government troops. The- latter hope to hold out until the arrival of reinforcements. Insurgents from Burgenland are stated to be marching against tho Government. The latter has entrusted the ex-Ministcr _ Abbe Stass with the task of inviting Karl to leave the country immediately. According to a Prague telegram, after a Cabbinot Council it was semi-officially stated that the Little Entente had determined to secure a definite settlement of . ilie Hapsburg question, and had communicated with the Allies' to that effect.— Aus.N.Z.
