THEFT FROM A DRAPER’S SHOP. Lee Richard Bennett- appeared before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., on Saturday and was charged with stealing on August 30 12 yards flannelette, one dozen serviettes, twp_pillow cases, four single cotton sheets, and four double cotton sheets, value £l2 75., 'the property of C. Smith, Ltd.; also with the theft on Friday last of a Madeira cloth, value 215., the property o' the same firm. The accused pleaded guilty. Chief Detective Kemp said that the accused was 25 years of age, anti had been tn the employ of C. Smith, Ltd. He was the sole support of his father and mother, who were not in good health. “F honestly believe,” tciiarketl the chief detectTve, "that this is his first lapse, and perhaps Your Worship would see fit to give him a chance.” All tho goods had been recovered, and no expense had been incurred. The Magistrate placed Bennett on probation for two years. For drunkenness, John Keown was fined 20s. and Robert Pitts was fined ss. Tho latter was fined a further 10s. for committing a breach of his prohibition order
