SPRING RACING
THE TRENTHAM MEETING SUNART WINS BIG HANDICAP EPITAPH BEST TWO-YEAR-OLD SHORTS HANDICAP TO AFFECTATION The Wellington Pacing Club’s spring meeting was commenced at the I rentham racecourse on Saturday. 'I he weather ■was fine, though the recent heavy rain made tho track holding. It, however, dried up considerably as the racing progressed. There was a fairly large attendance, including the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Jellicoe, and party, the Prime Minister, the Hon. AV. I*. Massey, Sir William Kerries, Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Minister of Lands, Hon. C*. J. Parr, Minister of Education, Hon. W. Downie Stewart, of Internal Affairs, Sir George Clifford!, president of the New Zealand Racing Conference, Sir James Carroll, and Mr. 1. M. Wilford, Leader of the Opposition. The sum of -£56,095 was handled by the totalisator staff against .£75,392 for the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £19,297. The racing was very good, and some fine finishes were recorded. Prior to the start of the racing an aeroplane landed some passengers on the course. This practice is barred in other parts, as the whirring of the motors upsets the racehorses. As a matter of fact this happened on Saturday, when several horses careered round their runs, and one of them fell over a fence. Secretary A. E. Whyte and his assistant, Mr. J. M. Griffiths, had everything in smooth workimr order, and the meeting passed off without a hitch of any kind The railway authorities coped with the traffic in a satisfactory manner , . , Mountain Lion, Viyella, Deborah, Ares, and Waetea were taken out of the Taita Handicap, and in a good betting race the public went for Prosperity as the best At tho start The Dunce jumped clear and followed by Prosperity and Wair’arapa, he led to the coruse proper Here Sir Otway was prominent amongst the others. In tho run home The Dunce tired, but he lasted long enough to beat Prosperity, who finished well, by a bare head. Bumptious was several lengths away, and then camo Stream. . , _ Gasbag, Admiral Codrington, Bose Wreath, Tinihanga, Barleycorn, and Starengo were taken out of the W ainui Handicap, and the old mud-lark Bagdad, Prince Martian, and Borealis divided public favour. Martial DaWn led n bunched field dow-n the back. At the half-mile Bagdad and Prince Martian became prominent, and were m behind the leader entering the straight. Boiealis then came fast, but ran very wide. Inside the distance Bagdad took char„e, and he ran in a winner by three lengths from Martial Dawn. Dainty Step finished on and got third place, by a narrow margin from Ton Tana and Prince Martian, who were in a line. Pluto, Penitent, Lord Desmond, Red Bob, and Sling Camp iims for the Rimntaka Handicap. Hum boldt and Whipping Boy began smart y and led down the back from Stylish Ladv. The leading positions weie the same entering the straight, but in the run home Humboldt had most pace, and won by half a length, with M'htaire nPC k away. Missland and Siberian fin ished next to the placed horses. Sasanof. Pillage was taken out of the AA Stakes, hut all the others went to the post. Epitaph was at a very short price, But she justified her backers confidence by leading all Um way. Mountain Lion was (second a furlong from homo, but April Folly finished well and cut him out of second place by a neck. The winner won bv four lengths. Alabama whs fourth, and then came Zany and Enthusiasm. Thirteen horses lined up for the October Handicap. Mireusonta and Still Sea being the public fancies. Tho pair were In'front from the start .and led on to the course proper. Mireusonta was then challenged by Bed Bob and Martian 'Miss, and in a good finish the latter got nn on the rails, and won by a neck from Mireusonta with Bed Boh three lengths away. Chant Boyal and Still Sen. were tho next to finish. A field of sixteen contested the Shorts Handicap, and backers i lumped for lAmythas. Astinome nnd Fulsome were clear of Affectation as they raced on to the course proper, where the favourite tried to get through on the inside, but I was disappointed. Affectation got clear two furlongs from home, and looked to I be, winning eerily, but Blackmail came Ivory fast and got within a neck of I Affectation. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY The following are tho acceptances for to-day:— ROSENEATH HANDICAP, of 350 sovs.
Astinome .... 7 0 TO-DAY’S PROSPECTS (By "Glencoe.”) Tho weather at time of writing is not promising, and the course will again be heavy. Tho fields are again on tho large side, and backers will experience some difficulty in making their selections. Bumptious, who will bo coupled with Uteaborg, is more seasoned than most of his opponents in tho Roseneath Handicap, and he may go out favourite. Morose, who wns second to Epitaph in the Hastings Stakes, is a very smart beginner and should show up well. Humboldt, winner of the Rimntaka Handicap, is again engaged and should make has presence felt in the Tararua Handicap, run over a furlong shorter. Cloasanta and Danger Zone arc fresh horses, and both should do well. The shorter distance will also suit Stylish Lady. Dick has 'been raised 151 b. for winning tho first hurdle race, but the distance to-day is a quarter of a mils shorter. Ruddy and Explorer are both fresh horses, and Royal Exchange will bo improved by her race on the opening day. Ruddy should bo favourite. The Juvenile Stakes has only drawn three acceptors, and is not likely to figure on the card next year. Epitaph is a. class above her two opponents. Tho big field of twenty-two has been accepted for in the Pearce Handicap. There are several fresh horses engaged, and matters in tho city on Saturday night suggested that there will be a lot of "wise” money for Thespian today. Other horses entitled to consideration are Dainty Step, Delight, Blackmail, and Esperance. Another big field of eighteen is down to compete in the Ruahine Handicap. The two top weights are both very smart, nnd Cclmisia ran the fastest halfmile of ihe season at Trentham on Thursday. Aleresanta. will go as fast as her over the first part, nnd the pair may beat themselves. Creme de Menthe will have plenty of supporters, 'but she has not struck form yet. Deucalion is a fresh horse, and will have a large following. Vindictive galloped well on Thursday, and may be in the front rank at. the finish.
Tho Champion Plate will draw one of tho best, fields of the year. Amythas may bo favourite, and despite his defeat on Saturday he is the correct favourite. Grotesque, will be the best of the three, year-olds. Tamatete. is likely to start in the sprint event. The card will conclude with flic* Nainai Handicap, six furlongs. Silver Link has not vet struct form, but Solfanello has Tamatete may be the actual favourite. He looks to have plenty of weight, but the field is not a strong one. Miss Gold and Fulsome are both well in. The last-named got a bad passage on

VIOLONCELLO’S RUNNING MATTER RAISED IN N.S.W. PARLIAMENT. Sydney, October 22. Tn the Legislative Assembly. Mr. Solly (a Labour member) raised the matte* of AGoloncello’s reversal of form in running unplaced in the Herbert Power Stakes and then winning the Caulfield Cup. He said that many experienced racegoers considered that there should have been an official inquiry. He contended that as the Caulfield racecourse, was Crown land it should not he held unless the holders gave an assurance that the racing would be above suspicion. It w.n-s hard to say whether or not there had been crooked running, but seeing that there had been no inquiry. Parliament should take steps to see that the public was protected from those who went into the sport to make it dirty.—Press Assn. VICTORIAN TRAINING NOTES. Melbourne, October 22.
