The SjS. and A. liner lonic is reported by a- Press Association cablegram as having left London on Wednesday for Wellington. She is due here at the end of November. PROGRESS TO BE CONVERTED INTO STEAMER. The "Lyttelton Times” reports that the three-masted schooner Progess, which has been laid up nt Port Chalmers for the part two or three years, has been sold to a Dunedin firm. The Progress, which was formerly a dredge, is to have the machinery installed that wag salved from the Mangapapa, wrecked at Karamea about eight years ago, and bought by Messrs. Miller Bros., of Port Chalmers, with the idea of installing it in the Progress at the time when they owned the vessel. The engines will be fitted aft. the mizzen mast will be taken away, and rhe will remain schooner rigged, similar to tho Karn, so that she will be able to make use of her sails. The engine is of 180 h.p., and the vessel will be able to carry tome 300 tons of cargo. The saloon has already been dismantled, and the work of installing the machinery commenyd. It is understood that she will be used in the coal trade between tho West Coast and Wellington. WIRELESS FROM PTAKO.

A wireless message was yesterday received by tlie Federal Line from the Pinko, which left Liverpool for New Zealand ports on September 7, stating that she expected to arrive at Auckland this afternoon. The Piako is due at Wellington on October 31. Sim lias 2300 tons of general cargo for discharge here, and will later proceed to Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. u

MAHENO LEAVES SYDNEY. The Union Company’s steamer Maheno, Which left Sydney on Wednesday afternoon, has 230 passengers on board, and is due here on Sunday. She is to sail on tho return trip to Sydney at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. THE PORT AUGUSTA FIRE. The C. and D. Hleamer Port Augusta, which caught fire on September 22 while en route from Now York to Australian ports, was towed into Cape Town by H.M.S. Dublin. The outbreak occurred in the bunkers and No. 2 hold. The latest advice received at Sydney stales that all tho cargo has been discharged from No. 2 hold, and after survey further advice will be sent with regard to the state of the cargo. PALOONA. DUE SUNDAY. The Union Company’s steamer Paloona, from Melbourne, is due here or. Sunday. She will sail on Wednesday for Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff, and Melbourne. WAIKOUATTI FOR SYDNEY TRADE. The Union Company’s < argo steamer Waikou-aiti, which has been laid up at Port Chalmers for several months past, tvill be recommissioned at the end of this week. She will load at Dunedin on Tuesday next for Sydney, completing at Lyttelton. The Waikouaiti will subsequently load at Sydney and Newcastle for Bluff, Dunedin, and Lyttelton, in place of the Wanaka. The latter vessel, after discharge at Bluff next week, will be placed iq another trade. RAUPO ARRIVES. The Scales barque Raupo, which left Newcastle on October 7, arrived in the stream early yesterday morning with a cargo of coal for the gasworks. On completion of her discharge she ie to lay up for overhaul. WAIMANA’S The S.S. and A. liner Waimana is to leave Napier to-day for Gisborne and Auckland. She is due back here from the latter port on November 2, and is to sail for London, via Cane Horn, three days later. . . THE BARQUE RONA. ( It was announced yesterday by Scales, Ltd., that the barque Kona, which, has been laid up since the completion of the discharge of her Newcastle cargo, will not resume until after Christmas. It is expected that she will go out in the stream at an early date. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain Collins, who ha*? been seriously ill during the time the Moeraki has been laid up in Wellington, is now convalescent, and able to get about for a few hours a day. _ Captain W. J. S. Eyre has-transferrort from the command of the Waipori to the Koranui, relieving Captain H. W. Platts, who has come ashore on holiday leave. Captain J. Bruce ha.s been. appointed to the command of tho Koromiko, relieving Captain J. Ran.kine, who has come ashore on holiday leave. Mr. W. W. Fish, chief officer of the Kurow, has transferred to the Koromiko in a similar capacity. *Mr. J. L. Adams'has joined the Koromiko as third officer. Mr. W. G. Kelsey has been appointed second officer of the Wingatui, relieving Mr. A. IT. Howie, who has come ashore for instructions. Mr. G. B. Morgan has joined the Mararoa as first mate. Mr. J. Kettle has signed on the Ka- , hika as chief engineer, vice Mr. J. H. Gillanders.

Tho previous position of tn® red fixed light was 150 ft. from the extreme outer end of the breakwater. Due here from Wanganui this morning, the John is scheduled to sail in the evening for Dunedin. On her return to Wellincton she will lay up for overhaul. The Wingatui is due from Lyttelton on Thursday to load for Auckland. She will probably leave for the . northern port the day of arrival. The Kanna is due from Auckland about Tucßdav. and should sail the same day for Lyttelton and Dunedin. The Kahika sails to-day for Greymouth to load for ellington. . The Kakapo arrived last night from Greymouth. and is to sail to-morrow for Nnnier. . ~ , The Kaiapoi is now due from Auckland. Whnncarei. a.nd Napier on Sunday, and is to rail for Greymouth on Monday. The Rama, which sailed for New Plymouth yesterday, is expected hack on Monday, and will eail the next day for Dunedin. Oamaru. Timaru. and Lyttelton. The Calm is due from Lyttelton to-day. and has been timed to sail to-morrow for Wanganui. She is expectod to return on Tuesday, after which she will load for the south. Tho Regains is expected from Nelson on Wednesday next. The Waimea will now sail to-day for Westport direct, instead of for Picton, Westport, and Greymouth. Tho Hinemoa’s departure for the Cook Strait lighthouses has on. account of the bad weather, been postponed until to-day.
