SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

The annual united gift evening of the Presyterian Orplianago and Social Service Association was held in Kent Terraco Scholroom last evening. The Bev. Dr. Gibb presided over a good attendance. The evening’s entertainment comprised a programme of songs, recitations, etc., to which the following contributed: —Recitations, Miss Ldna Purdie, Miss Jean M'Lay, Master Lawrence Searle; songs, Miss Low, Mr. IVilson, Miss Coventry, Miss Gaudier; a duet, Miss Barry and Miss Simpson; violin solo, Miss Raby; songs, tho boys of the orphanage, and later the girls. The supper arrangements were in charge of the Ladies' Committee, and a sale of sweets and flowers, the latter in charge of the Hutt ladies, added to the evening’s proceeds. A very helpful supply of provisions, material, etc., to assist with tho upkeep of the homes, was received.

Mr. and Mrs. C. Pockley have returned to Wellington from a visit to Australia. Miss Sophie Watson (Palmerston North) is tho guest of Mrs. lan Duncan.

Tho engagement is amsounced of Miss Marion Martin, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Martin, Martinborough, to Mr. ■'David S. Warren, son of the late Mr. Holmes Warren and Mrs. HolmeS’~Warren, of Turanganui, Featherston?

On Thursday evening the first of a series of social reunions of members of tho Catholic Ladies’ Club took place at the clubroom, Willis Street, and proved most enjoyable. An interesting lecturette on "Microbes” was given by Dr. Roche Kelly, who was cordially thanked by the president at the conclusion of his address. A short musical programme was contributed to by the Misses K. Jansen, Doherty, Corby, Redican, and Flan. It is intended to continue these reunions monthly.

A very successful party in aid of the Plunket Homo was held in th® Melrose meeting rooms on Wednesday evening. Eudhre and other games were played, and an enjoyable time was spent. Supper was provided by the committee— Mesdames, Aitkin, Duff, A. I‘. and F. G. Tonks. The president of thc committee stated that a every successful canvass of the district for funds had been made, also that arrangements were in hand to hold a garden party at an early date for the same object, for which she asked the assistance of all present. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the committee and to Miss E.. Aitkin, the energetic secretary. During the evening Miss Aitkin was presented with a beautiful bouquet and congratulated on the (success of her .efforts!. Miss M. Williams was the winner of the ladieseuchre prize,, and Mr. Eaves the winner of the gentlemen’s prize.

A very old settlor, in the person of Mrs. Monk, widow of the late Mr. Alfred Monk, passed aw-ay on Wednesday, aged 62 years. Deceased, who was very well known and highly respected, lived at Makara for some years, at Paraparaumu, and then at Reikorangi. A large family, including Mr Alex. Monk (clmirman ot the Horowhenua County Council), Messrs. Sid and Frank Monk, Mesdames Len Howell, George Carter, W. Liddle, and Miss Pearl Monk, aro left to mourn thenloss.

Guests at. Government House are Sir George Clifford and Miss Clifford (Christchurch), Colonel and Mrs. Allen (Morrinsville), and Miss Barton (Featherston).

Wedding at Wanganui. A wedding of interest to a groat many people in Wellington and other parts of tho Dominion took place at Christ Church, Wanganui, on Wednesday evenin'- when Mr. Frank Newman, only son of°D(r. A. K. Newman, M.P., and the late Mrs. Newman, of Hobson Street, Wellington, was married to Mrs. Nancy Aloore, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alan Cameron, of Marangai, Wanganui. The wedding ceremony was performed b’ r the vicar of Christ Church, tho service was fullv choral, and the church was beautifully deorated with flowers The bride’s costume was of white taffetas, embroidered with purple and mauve grapes, the skirt being made with paniers of mauve tulle. Her hat was a small white shape, trimmed with silver lace, and she carried a bouquet of lilies ot tho valley, Mrs. lan Johnston was matron of honour, wearing a gown of grey charineuse, with a large hip-bow, lined with rose colour, the costume being embroidered with rose-coloured berries. She also wore a rose panne cloak, and a white feather toque; her bouquet being ot roses. Commander Williams was the best man. Mrs. Cameron was in mole brocade, with paniers of gold lace, her hat being a small one of mole colour, with a large lace bow and henna frother. Miss Cameron was in copper-coloured charmouse, embroidered in gold thread, her hat Being a large 'black one, ornamented with coloured berries. Miss Joan Cameron was in white tfrgandi muslin piped with black, and a large white hat. The reception, which included a dance, was held at the residence of Mrs. Wilson, Wickstead Street. Wanganui. The supper table was nrtistially arranged with lilies of the valley and large silver candelabra. the candles being shaded with rose colour. Tho drawing-room was decorated in prune and copper tones, while the ballroom was gay with p’nk azaleas and sweet peas. Dr. Newman was, unfortunately, not well enough to go up to Wanganui for the wedding. The M ellington guests were Mr. Guy Johnston Ind Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Word. Others present included: Mr. and Mrs. Harold Johnston (Dannevirko), Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Campbell (Hawke’s Bay). Dr. and Mrs. Christie, Dr. and Mrs. Earle, Dr. and Mrs. Robertson, Mrs. Marshall. Miss Brewer, Mrs. C. Nathan, Mrs. and Miss Nixon, and many others. The bride and bridegfeom left for a brief tour, which will include a visit to Wellington the in-ide wearing n handsome coat of black satin lined with flame colour, over her travelling costume. Mr. and Mrs. Newman will make their home at Koputaroa, Levin. In Aid of the Plunket Home Fund. An enjoyable evening was given by Mesdames *G. W. Dowling and H. Tolun, at Mr. Dowling’s residence, Waipapa Road," Hiftaitai, on Wednesday. Games and competitions resulted in the sum of £8 10s. being collected, which amount will be handed to tho Hataitai Commitfee of frEc Plunket Home Appeal. Australian Club. The fortnightly social of the Australian Club was held last night. Dancing and musical items made up a splendid programme. Mr. Stanton was M.C., and Mrs. Stanton was hostess, ably assisted bv Mrs. Ross and Mrs: Burley. Ttems by»Mr. Smith, Mr. Wilkinson, and Mrs. Hempton were well received. Mis. Skews was tho pianiste. Supper was provided anil tho members and visitors really enjoyed tho pleasant evening.

DANCE AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE A AfOST ENJOYABLE EVENING. One of tho most enjoyable of dances was that which was given at Government House last evening by Their Exthe Govei'iior-G|.-nei-al paid Viscountess Jellicoe. The ballroom was not at any time crowded, and the en-closed-in verandah, with its beautiful pot plants and palms, was again a favourite sitting-out place between the dances. A very pleasant contrast to tills dampness and drbairin.e&& that existed outside were the reception rooms, with their warmth of colouring and masses of flowers. Supper was set :n the large dining-room and billiard-room, pink azaleas and narcissi decorating the tables, with, in the former, the silver models of the Iron Duke and a galleon of Elizabethan days occupying a prominent place upon the table. Their Excellencies arrived in the ballroom at nine o’clock, and immediately dancing begtin, without an official set being formed.

Lady Jellico© wore a frock of soft black satin, made with a narrow train, and with jewelled trimming on the corsage. She also wore diamond ornaments. The Hon. Lucy Jellicoo was in a coral pink frock of silk, with panels of tulle banded with silk of the same colour.
