A short time ago the Government was asked by Dr. Philip Harper, who is tn. charge of the Leper Asylum, Fiji, to seek the aid of New Eeafaiiders, by way of gifts, to lighten the burden of the 240 inmates of the institution. Publication of the appeal in the daily papers of Wellington and Auckland Jias brought a generous response, and the Minister of External Affairs (the Hon. E. P. Lee) made complimentary references yesterday to the benevolent tendencies of a number of the people of the Dominion. Mr. Lee stated that he had received a communication from Air. Alfred Nathan, of Messrs L. D. Nathan and Co., Auckland, the New Zealand agents for the Fijian Government, advising that a number of gifts had come to hand, and to these the firm itself proposed adding a donation. As it was not intended to forward the gifts to Fiji until next month people sympathetic of tho needs of the unfortunate men and women segregated at the Fijian Leper Station had opportunities of donating money, books, clothing, and other suitable and useful things which would he received at the. station in time for the Christmas season. Gifts should be addressed care of Messrs. Nathan and Co., Auckland. A fairly large stall is maintained at tho Leper Station, and tho medical superintendent and nursing sisters by their organising ability, energy, and devotion to duty have brought about an atmosphere of contentment among the inmates which is very praiseworthy. The biggest and most powerful telescope in the world has recently been installed in Mount. Wilson Observatory, America, more than a mile above sea level. With its parts, it weights 100 tons, and the great mirror alone is 13 inches thick, 100 inches in diameter, and weighs 44 tons. Ideas mean money If they are developed and properly protected. That idea cf yours, simp’.e thougii it may be, will probably bo worth a kt of money if patented. Don’t delay. Consult Henry Hughes, Ltd., Patent Attorneys, 157 Featherston Street, Wellington.—Advt
