POPLAR COUNCILLORS
RELEASE GRANTED BY CHIEF JUSTICE. London, October 12. The Poplar councillors have filed an affidavit before the King's Bench disclaiming any wish, to treat the Court with disrespect. They state also that they are anxious to attend a conference to consider the financial difficulties of the situation, and that they will not spare their efforts to make the conference a success. The Chief Justice released them in the hope that they would not disregard their statutory duties. * Aus.-N.Z.'Cable Assn. [Thirty-six Ponlar councillors were sent to gaol for failing to levy rates to meet overdue calls of tho London County Council nnd the Metropolitan Asylums Board.] NO PROMISE TO LEVY RATE. (Rec.' October 13, 5.5 p.m.) London, October 12. The Poplar councillors who have been released assert that they have given no promise to levy the rate. Directly the women were released from Holloway Gaol they motored to Brixton Prison to greet tho male prisoners. As the women reached the prison they raised coo-eca, which were answered from inside.
