TRADE NEWS
COMPLAINT AGAINST PRESS ASSOCIATION. At Tuesday’s meeting of the council of the Central Chamber of Commerce, Mr. J. L. Arcus drew attention to tho Press Association’s report of the last hide sales in Christchurch, in which it was stated that prices had increased 75 per cent., whereas it was ascertained on inquiry that tho rise was only 15 per cent. This incorrect information, he said, had been sent out and published here tho day before the Wellington hide sales, which suggested that the Press Association had permitted its service to be used for trade purposes in a wrong direction. In sending out such reports the Press Association should see that they contained a fair measure of truth. Mr. A. 1,. Hunt said that as a rule the Press Association’s service was very reliable, and it was very seldom that such a case as this occurred. Ai r. H. Hart said the Press Association was usually satisfactory. Unfortunately in this case it could not say Hint an error in the figures had taken place, as the general tenor of the message specially emphasised the big increase oriels. A resolution was passed deploring the incident.
