CIRCULARS AND PRICE LISTS
POSTAGE RATES CRITICISED. The council of the Central Chamber of Commerce yesterday received a lette from Messrs. Robert Hall and Co., Ltd., on the subject of postal rates for circulars etc, and'making the following sug ges't’ions :—“(1) Tho IJd. postage on circulars and price lists has been a great imposition on business people, and has limited to a very great extent their facilities for doing business. (2) We bethat a resumption of the halfpenny pos age would more than treble the number of circulars and price- lists—it would in our case—and so increase the postal revenue. (3) This present proposal of the Postmaster-General is one to winch strong objection should bo taken, inasmuch as it is discriminating in its operation, and gives concessions to certain sections of the business community against others-to wit, drapery and other firms, quack medicines, and the like. W We also contend that tho cost of delivery of circulars to retail business places would be much less than to householders as business places invariably have postal deliveries daily in any case, while tho average householder may only have correspondence once a week, or at even longer periods. (5) Generally speaking, postal and telegraph rates are too high, restricting business, and consequently reducing postal revenue, and it is time the public, especially the business community fts a whole, had some concession made in tho above service.” It was resolved, after a brief discussion, to send the proposals on to the Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department for his consideration.
